Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

At 1:00 a.m., an unmarked convoy of four black armored Mercedes sedans pulled up into the dark alley behind the South Side building.
Knox stepped out of the lead vehicle, dressed in a sleek charcoal suit, carrying a heavy tactical case. He walked up the rear fire escape, entering Apartment 4A without a sound.
When Knox entered the room, he saw Tristan standing by the window, wearing a tailored black suit that had been delivered an hour earlier, adjusting his silver cufflinks. Beside him sat Maya, wrapped in a heavy wool coat, sipping warm tea, her eyes still wide with shock at the speed with which Tristan’s secret empire was revealing itself before her eyes.
"Boss," Knox bowed his head deeply. "The strike team is assembled. Thirty operators armed with silenced weapons are surrounding Eddie Vance’s club on 12th Street. We have cut their communications lines."
Maya’s cup rattled against her saucer. "Thirty operators...? Tristan... who are you really?"
Tristan turned from the window, looking at her with a gentle, serious expression. "My full name is Tristan Wolfe. Three months ago, the newspapers declared me dead."
Maya’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. "Tristan Wolfe... the kingpin of the Wolfe Syndicate? The man who owned half of Chicago?"
"I used to think I owned it," Tristan said softly, walking over to her, kneeling on one knee beside her chair so he was looking into her eyes. "Until I learned that power without truth is just a illusion. I'm going to bring your sister back tonight, Maya. But to do it, I have to step back into the blood."
"Why are you doing this for me?" Maya whispered, tears glistening in her eyes once more. "You could have stayed hidden. You could have executed your revenge without exposing yourself."
Tristan reached up, his large thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "Because for three weeks, while I was dead to the world, you brought life to my door in a ceramic bowl. You gave me back my humanity, Maya. The least I can do is give you back your family."

He stood up, turning to Knox. "Move Team One to the front entry. Team Two takes the rear exit. If anyone raises a weapon... eliminate them."
"Yes, Boss!" Knox grinned violently. "It's good to have you back, King."
