Chapter 10 - The Twenty-First Year

Spring arrived in the Berkshire Mountains four months later.
The dark, oppressive pines surrounding Blackwood Manor were filled with the bright, sharp green of new growth, and the black waters of the lower lake shimmered under a warm May sun.
Demolition crews had spent three weeks tearing down the rotten east wing of the estate. The dark plaster walls, the secret oak doors, and the lead-sealed window slots had been reduced to piles of crushed stone and stone rubble, cleared away to make room for an open garden of white lilies.
Claire Bennett stood on the newly constructed stone terrace overlooking the valley, wearing a simple blue linen dress that caught the soft mountain breeze.
Beside her stood Ethan Hale, holding two hot mugs of coffee.
"The final audit cleared this morning," Ethan said, handing her a mug. "The Bennett Trust has been fully recovered. The shipping fleet is operational, and the charity wing for missing children has been officially endowed in your mother's name."
Claire took a sip of the warm coffee, looking out over the mountains she had only glimpsed through wooden slots for twenty years.
"And Arthur and Vivian?" she asked softly.
"Pled guilty to federal kidnapping, conspiracy, and twenty counts of financial fraud," Ethan replied. "They'll spend the rest of their lives in a federal facility in Pennsylvania. They will never see this mountain again."
Claire turned her head, looking at the smooth granite wall where the entrance to her former cell had once stood.
In the center of the new garden stood a high granite marker, carved with a single sentence chosen by Claire herself:
NOT ERASED. RESTORED.
She reached out, her pale, warm hand finding Ethan’s hand, locking her fingers through his with a quiet, grounded strength that had survived two decades of shadow.
"What will you do now, Claire?" Ethan asked gently, looking into her clear, hazel eyes. "You have the world back. You can go anywhere."
Claire looked at the open road stretching down the mountain toward Boston, then turned her face up to the warm, bright sunlight shining down from the sky.
May you like
"For twenty years," Claire whispered, a soft, genuine smile finally spreading across her face, "I counted days in the dark. Now, Ethan... I think I'd like to start counting years in the sun."
Together, they walked down the stone steps of the terrace, stepping out of the shadows of the past and into the endless light of the world ahead.
