Chapter 9 - The Erasure Reversed

Harold Vance grabbed the photographs, his hands trembling violently as he examined the images of the tiny plaster cell built into the east wing of Blackwood Manor.
He turned his eyes toward Vivian, his voice shaking with a mixture of professional horror and personal disgust. "Vivian... what is this? You told this firm... you provided a certified death certificate!"
"She's an impostor!" Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking into a high, hysterical register as she backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "She's a fraud hired by Ethan Hale to steal my sister's legacy! My niece died twenty-two years ago! She drowned in the lake!"
Claire walked straight up to the head of the conference table, stopping two feet from her aunt.
She slowly reached into her collar and pulled out a thin silver chain she had worn beneath her clothes for twenty years—a chain bearing a small, heavy silver key with the Bennett crest hand-engraved into the bow.
She placed the key on top of the signature page.
"The master vault key," Claire said softly, her hazel eyes fixed on Vivian’s trembling form. "My mother gave this to me the night before she died. She told me that no matter what happened, no one could open the primary Bennett ledger without this key. You searched my room for twenty years looking for it, Vivian. You never checked the lining of my childhood stuffed bear."
Harold Vance took the silver key, his hands trembling as he fitted it into a small steel box that sat on the mahogany sideboard.
The lock turned with a clean, smooth CLICK.
Vance pulled open the lid, revealing a thick, leather-bound volume stamped in gold leaf: THE CLAIRE BENNETT TRUST AGREEMENT — ORIGINAL BLOODLINE REGISTER.
Vance turned to the final page, reading the explicit handwritten clause left by Elizabeth Bennett twenty-two years ago:
Should my daughter Claire be proven living at any age, all powers of attorney granted to my sister Vivian Ashford shall immediately terminate with prejudice. Any attempt to declare Claire deceased without physical DNA verification shall constitute immediate forfeiture of all Ashford family allowances.
Vance raised his head, looking at Vivian with a cold, absolute finality.

"The trust is restored," Vance said flatly. "Mr. Hale, call the District Attorney. Tell them we have an immediate warrant to execute in this room."
Vivian collapsed into the nearest leather armchair, her face buried in her hands, her cold, elegant composure completely destroyed as the heavy footsteps of Boston police officers echoed down the marble hallway outside.
