Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Realm

The sun was setting over the northern estate, painting the sky in deep shades of crimson, gold, and violet. The winter mist had given way to lush green gardens, where rose bushes bloomed along the stone pathways leading to the main house.
On the grand rear terrace, a long dining table was set with silver cutlery, crystal glasses, and fresh flowers.
Julian and Chloe sat together at the head of the table, enjoying a quiet dinner as the evening breeze rustled through the oak trees. Surrounding the estate, the security guards remained on patrol, their presence constant and watchful, but to Chloe, they no longer felt like jailers. They were the iron wall that kept her peaceful world secure.
Arthur walked onto the terrace, carrying a silver tray with two glasses of vintage red wine. He poured the wine smoothly, bowing slightly before stepping back.
“Will there be anything else for this evening, Mr. and Mrs. Vance?” Arthur asked warmly.
“No, Arthur. That will be all for tonight. Thank you,” Julian replied, gesturing for the old butler to take the rest of the evening off.
Julian raised his glass, looking across the table at his wife. The faint light of the setting sun caught the emerald ring on her finger—a Vance family heirloom that had belonged to his mother, passed down to the woman who now held his heart and shared his throne.
“To unexpected turns in dark alleys,” Julian proposed, his voice rich and warm.
Chloe smiled, raising her glass to touch his with a clear, musical clink.
“To locking the doors,” she added softly.
They drank slowly, enjoying the peaceful silence of the estate.
Chloe set her glass down, standing up from her chair, walking over to the stone balustrade overlooking the gardens below. Julian stood up and followed her, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched the first stars appear in the darkening sky.
She remembered the terrified girl who had curled into a ball on the floorboard of a black Audi, bleeding, hopeless, waiting for death or recapture. She remembered the cold snap of the door locks engaging, the terror of realizing she was trapped inside a stranger’s vehicle.
She had thought that lock was the end of her freedom.

She had not known that behind those locked doors lay the only man who would ever treat her like a queen, the only shield capable of destroying her past, and the only home she would ever need.
Chloe leaned back into Julian’s solid, warm chest, taking a deep, peaceful breath of the fresh evening air, completely safe in the sovereign realm of the lion.
