Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The southern distribution warehouse was a massive concrete facility near the industrial docks, surrounded by tall chain-link fences topped with razor wire. Rain was falling again, heavy and grey, drumming against the metal roofs of the parked freight trucks.
Outside the main security gate, three battered SUVs were parked in a line, blocking the entry lane. A group of fifteen men in leather jackets, armed with handguns and iron bars, stood around the vehicles, shouting at the two stone-faced Vance guards standing behind the reinforced steel gates.
At the center of the crowd stood Tommy Miller.
Tommy was thirty-five, broad-shouldered, with greasy dark hair combed back, wearing a black leather coat. His face was twisted in a grimace of unearned authority, a thick bandage wrapped tightly around his right forearm where Chloe had stabbed him the night before.
Three black luxury sedans pulled up to the gate from inside the facility.
The security gate slid open automatically. The lead sedan pulled forward, followed by Julian’s Audi. The vehicles stopped ten feet away from Tommy’s line of SUVs.
The doors opened, and six immaculate Vance security operators stepped out, their dark suits unbuttoned, hands resting casually near the shoulder holsters hidden beneath their coats. They didn't shout or draw their weapons; their posture was relaxed, confident, terrifying.
Then, Julian stepped out of his car.
Tommy straightened his posture, adjusting his leather jacket, trying to project strength. But as Julian walked forward, flanked by Marcus, Tommy’s men instinctively stepped back a pace, recognizing the sheer aura of authority emanating from the head of the Vance family.
In the back seat of the Audi, behind heavily tinted glass, Chloe sat with her hands clutched in her lap, watching through the rain-streaked window, her heart hammering violently.
“Julian Vance!” Tommy called out, forcing a smirk onto his face. “I didn't think the big boss would show up for a minor local matter!”
Julian stopped five feet away, his hands folded loosely behind his back. The rain fell on his dark hair, but he didn't blink.
“You are blocking my logistics route, Miller,” Julian said, his tone as flat and unbothered as if he were discussing the weather. “You have three minutes to clear your vehicles before my men crush them into scrap metal.”
Tommy’s smirk faded, replaced by a dark, angry flush. “I’m not here to mess with your trucks, Vance! I’m here for what’s mine! Last night, one of my girls ran out on me. My boys saw her climb into the back of your Audi behind The Velvet Lounge.”
“Is that so?” Julian asked quietly.
“Yeah, that’s so!” Tommy spat, taking a step forward, pointing a gloved finger at Julian’s chest. “She stole money from me. She belongs to me. Give her back, and we’ll forget this whole misunderstanding. You don't want a war over some broken street bitch, do you?”
The air around the confrontation seemed to instantly plummet twenty degrees.
Marcus’s hand drifted beneath his jacket. The six Vance operators shifted their stances instantly, their eyes locking onto key targets among Tommy’s men.
Julian didn't draw a gun. He took one step forward, closing the distance between himself and Tommy. He was a full head taller than the gang leader, his dark eyes locking onto Tommy’s with a lethal intensity that made Tommy’s finger drop back to his side.
“First,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. “You do not address me by my first name. You call me Mr. Vance.”
Tommy swallowed hard, his bravado beginning to crack beneath the weight of Julian’s gaze.
“Second,” Julian continued, raising his right hand and pointing toward the black Audi parked behind him. “The woman in that car is no longer yours. She never was.”
Tommy’s eyes widened as he looked past Julian, catching the faint silhouette of Chloe sitting in the rear seat of the sedan.
“You... you took her?” Tommy rasped, anger battling with fear in his chest. “She’s my woman! I bought her! I spent two years putting a roof over her head!”
“You abused her,” Julian corrected coldly. “You hunted her like an animal through my alleyways. And then your men had the audacity to approach my personal vehicle.”
Julian stepped so close to Tommy that their coats almost touched.
“I am taking your southern protection routes today, Miller,” Julian declared smoothly. “I am freezing your local bank accounts through my associates at the commercial treasury. And if I see you or your men within five miles of my estate, my club, or this woman...”
Julian leaned in closer, whispering five words into Tommy’s ear that made every drop of color drain from the gang leader’s face.
Tommy took two fast steps backward, staring at Julian as if he were looking at a demon incarnate. He looked at his men, who were looking back at him in terror, waiting for an order that never came.
“Clear the road,” Tommy stammered, his voice weak and trembling. “Move the trucks! Move them now!”
Tommy scrambled back into his SUV, his men frantically piling into their vehicles, tires spinning wildly on the wet asphalt as they reversed down the street, fleeing the warehouse like panicked rats.
Julian didn't watch them leave. He turned around, buttoning his jacket, and walked back toward his sedan.
He opened the door and climbed inside, settling into the driver’s seat.
Chloe sat frozen in the back, staring at him through the mirror, speechless. “What... what did you say to him?”
May you like
Julian met her gaze in the glass, adjusting his rearview mirror back to its proper position.
“I told him,” Julian said softly, “that the next time I see his face, I will bury him beneath the docks.”
