Chapter 4 - The Social Storm

By 6:00 AM, the footage from the Ashcroft Hotel ballroom had reached eighty million views across three major social media platforms.
The headlines were merciless:
“Whitmore CEO Stands By as VP Kicks Pregnant Wife.” “The Forty-Second Silence: Watch Daniel Whitmore Calculate Business Over Blood.” “Billionaire Arthur Bellamy Steps In Where CEO Fails.”
In his penthouse high above Michigan Avenue, Daniel Whitmore paced across his Italian hardwood floors, a cold ice pack pressed against his throbbing forehead. The phone in his hand was ringing incessantly—board members, PR crisis managers, legal counsel, and frantic investors demanding explanations.
Vanessa Hale sat on his velvet sofa, her hair tied back, her eyes rimmed with red. Her phone was silent, having been confiscated two hours ago by her father’s legal team.
"We need to release a statement immediately," Vanessa said, her voice strained. "We say it was an accident. We say you two were having a private marital dispute, I stepped in to separate you, and she fell."
"Are you insane?!" Daniel roared, throwing his glass against the glass wall. It shattered into a thousand tiny glitter pieces. "Six hundred people saw you raise your heel and kick her, Vanessa! The audio caught you saying 'don't make this dramatic!' The internet is calling me a monster and you a psychopath!"
"Watch your mouth, Daniel," Vanessa snapped, her corporate composure finally snapping into raw aggression. "My father is calling the chief of police right now to suppress the hotel security footage—"
"The hotel security footage doesn't matter!" Daniel screamed, grabbing his tablet and shoving it into her face. "Look at this! Arthur Bellamy’s personal security team confiscated the hotel's raw server feeds before your father even left the valet stand! Arthur owns the evidence!"
The front door chimed.
Daniel rushed to open it, hoping it was his head of public relations.
Instead, two process servers in plain grey suits stood in the hallway, holding a thick stack of legal documents.
"Daniel Whitmore?" the lead server asked.
"Yes," Daniel said automatically.
"You've been served," the man said, handing him the top stack. "Emergency restraining order filed on behalf of Claire Vance-Whitmore, effective immediately. You are barred from coming within five hundred feet of her, her residence, or any medical facility she attends."
The second server stepped forward and handed a separate stack to Vanessa, who had walked up behind Daniel.
"Vanessa Hale?"
"What is this?" Vanessa demanded, backing away.
"A formal summons from the Cook County State's Attorney's Office," the server said flatly. "Aggravated assault of a pregnant person. You are expected at the precinct for booking by 10:00 AM."
Vanessa turned white. "Booking? You can't book me! Do you know who my father is?"
"Your father," the server replied, turning to leave, "is currently being interviewed by the FBI regarding Delaware account transfers. Have a nice day."

Daniel dropped the papers onto the marble floor. His phone buzzed in his pocket. A text message from Arthur Bellamy's personal secretary:
