Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

At 1:45 PM, a convoy of dark silver Lincoln Navigators pulled up to the private executive entrance of Whitmore Tower.
The street below was swarming with news vans, cameras, and reporters holding microphones toward the glass doors. The story had transcended corporate news; it was now a national culture war—a story of extreme wealth, cruelty, and the unexpected protection of an eleven-billion-dollar legend.
Claire stepped out of the second vehicle. She wore a tailored charcoal-grey maternity suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless knot. She looked restored, cold, and entirely composed. Beside her walked Arthur Bellamy, flanked by four towering security guards.
"You ready for this, my dear?" Arthur asked as they entered the private elevator.
"I spent eight years playing the supportive wife in those rooms, Arthur," Claire said, watching the floor numbers light up. "I know where every shadow hides."
When the elevator doors opened on the fortieth floor, the board room was already filled with tension so thick it felt physical.
Nine board members sat around the forty-foot mahogany table. Daniel sat at the far end, his suit wrinkled, dark circles under his eyes, looking like a man who hadn't slept or showered in twenty-four hours. Vanessa was notably absent—currently being fingerprinted at the central precinct.
When Claire walked into the room, two board members stood up out of instinct.
Daniel’s head snapped up. "Claire... what are you doing here? This is a private executive session. You don't have standing."
"She has twenty-four percent of my standing, Daniel," Arthur said, taking the seat at the head of the table. Claire took the leather chair directly to his right, setting her silver drive on the polished mahogany surface.
The chairman of the board, Thomas Kincaid—a stern man in his seventies—cleared his throat. "Daniel, sit down and shut up. Mrs. Whitmore, we are deeply relieved to see you are in good health after the horrific events of last night."
"Thank you, Thomas," Claire said calmly. "I know your time is valuable, so I won't waste it discussing Daniel's personal failures as a husband."
She clicked a button on the small presenter remote sitting beside her. The large screen at the front of the boardroom flickered to life.
"Instead," Claire continued, "we are going to talk about Project Aegis—the twenty-eight million dollar defense contract that Daniel and Vanessa Hale have been systematically looting for eighteen months."
Daniel sprang out of his chair. "This is slander! She's bitter, she's trying to ruin my reputation during a divorce!"
"Sit down, Daniel!" Chairman Kincaid barked, his eyes glued to the screen.
The display showed detailed transaction logs, offshore wire transfers, and forged engineering compliance certificates bearing Daniel’s personal electronic signature.
"These documents," Claire explained, her voice sharp and precise, "show that twenty-eight million dollars meant for titanium alloy stress testing on the new drone fleet was diverted to 'Apex Strategic Solutions'—a Delaware LLC registered to Malcolm Hale’s campaign manager."
The board members gasped. One senior investor pulled off his glasses, staring at Daniel in utter horror.
"If the Department of Defense conducts an audit next week—which they will, because I submitted these files to the Pentagon's Inspector General two hours ago—Whitmore Aeronautics will lose its defense clearance," Claire said. "The stock won't drop ten percent. It will be delisted."

Daniel collapsed back into his chair, his hands trembling violently. "Claire... please... we can fix this. We're family..."
"We were family," Claire corrected him, her hazel eyes completely devoid of warmth. "Until you calculated the price of my daughter's life."
