Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

Dominic didn't panic. He slowly released the comms button, his face turning to marble.

"Evelyn moved faster than I anticipated," Dominic murmured. "She knew if I kept you locked in my cellar overnight, I would eventually find the truth. She brought her father’s pocket cops to seize you before I could extract a confession."

"If they take me into state custody," Claire said, terror creeping into her voice, "I’ll never make it to a arraignment. I’ll die of a 'drug overdose' or a 'heart attack' in a holding cell before morning."

"Nobody takes what is mine," Dominic said calmly. He turned to Mason, who had just entered the study through a side panel. "Mason, take two men and intercept Senator Mercer at the main gate. Delay them. Demand to verify the authenticity of the warrant with the state prosecutor’s office. Give me twenty minutes."

"Understood, Boss," Mason said, turning on his heel and vanishing down the corridor.

Dominic grabbed a heavy black wool coat from a rack and draped it over Claire’s shoulders. "We are going to the St. Jude vaults now."

Claire blinked. "Now? In the middle of a raid?"

"The best time to burn an enemy's warehouse is while they are busy invading your home," Dominic said, pulling a sleek silver pistol from his desk drawer and checking the magazine with practiced ease. "Evelyn thinks she has cornered me. She thinks my attention will be entirely consumed by her father's state troopers at the gate. She won't be expecting us to strike at her family's primary distribution hub."

He took her by her uninjured left hand, pulling her toward a hidden elevator concealed behind a mahogany bookshelf. "Can you walk?"

"I can run if I have to," Claire said fiercely.

The elevator descended deep into the bedrock beneath the Hudson River, emerging into a flooded concrete utility tunnel that connected the Vale estate to the old industrial docks two miles away. A customized, high-speed matte-black electric transport vehicle was waiting on small steel rails.

Dominic shoved Claire into the passenger seat, jumped into the driver's side, and slammed the throttle forward. The vehicle accelerated silently through the dark tunnel, the damp concrete walls blurring past them at sixty miles per hour.

As they tore through the subterranean darkness, Dominic kept his eyes fixed on the track ahead. "When we reach the vaults, you stay behind me. You use that nose of yours to confirm which barrels contain the false shipments. Once we have visual and chemical proof of their illegal cargo, I will leak the footage directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

"That will destroy the Mercer family's political protection overnight," Claire realized.

"It will ruin them," Dominic agreed coldly. "The Senator will spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary. His docks will be seized. And Evelyn..." He paused, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. "...Evelyn will be left entirely at my mercy."

Five minutes later, the electric cart screeched to a halt at the terminus of the tunnel.

Dominic forced open a heavy steel security hatch, stepping out into the damp, salt-heavy night air of the abandoned St. Jude Docks. The massive, decaying stone structure of the 19th-century monastery loomed above them like a skeletal beast against the dark clouds hanging over the Hudson River.

Dominic drew his weapon, moving with terrifying grace through the shadows of the rotting wooden piers. Claire followed close behind, her sneakers making no sound against the wet gravel.

They slipped through a rusted side door into the subterranean vaults beneath the monastery.

The air inside was thick, cold, and smelled heavily of stagnant river water, damp oak, and rot. Hundreds of massive oak wine barrels were stacked four high in long, dark aisles beneath vaulted stone ceilings.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving.

She closed her eyes and took a deep, deliberate breath through her nose.

The scent of aging wood was strong. The bitter, acidic tang of cheap wine was present.

But beneath it, cutting through the damp air like a razor, was a distinct, metallic smell—the sharp, unmistakable odor of refined acetone, raw chemical precursor, and industrial rubber seals.

Claire opened her eyes and pointed toward a dark aisle near the back of the vault. "There," she whispered. "Row fourteen. Barrel stack C. That isn't wine, Dominic. That's chemical grade fentanyl precursor."

Dominic moved silently toward the stack, pulling a small tactical flashlight from his pocket. He clicked it on, casting a tight beam of white light over the massive oak casks.

Each cask bore the elegant brand of Chateau Haut-Brion.

Dominic pulled a small tactical knife from his belt and jammed the blade into the wooden bung of the bottom barrel. He twisted the knife, breaking the seal.

A clear, colorless liquid trickled out onto the concrete floor, instantly vaporizing into a sharp, acrid chemical haze that made Claire’s eyes water thirty feet away.

"Jackpot," Dominic whispered.

Before he could pull out his camera, a blinding spotlight snapped on from the upper gallery of the vault, illuminating Dominic and Claire in a harsh, inescapable beam of white light.

A slow, mocking applause echoed down from the iron catwalk above.

"I must admit, Dominic," Evelyn Mercer’s voice rang out through the cavernous space, smooth, arrogant, and dripping with triumph. "You always were smarter than the rest of them. But you were always far too trusting of the help."
