Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Blood

By dawn, the St. Jude Docks were swarming with over a hundred federal vehicles, state police cruisers, and mobile crime labs.
The seize was the largest illegal chemical precursor bust in the history of the Eastern District of New York. The Mercer political machine was dismantled in a single morning—Senator Mercer, his brothers, and forty-two high-ranking associates were arrested under federal RICO indictments.
Dominic Vale stood near the edge of the pier, watching the sunrise over the gray waters of the Hudson River. His black wool coat fluttered in the cold morning wind.
Beside him, Claire sat on the lowered tailgate of an unmarked federal SUV, a warm thermal blanket draped over her shoulders. A fresh bandage had been applied to her hand by a paramedic.
Agent Marcus Vance, the lead federal prosecutor for the organized crime division, stepped up to Dominic, holding a thick electronic tablet.
"The Mercer paper trail is complete, Vale," Vance said, his tone professional but cautious. "Between the video feed from your watch and the chemical identification provided by Miss Bennett, the grand jury has already issued sealing indictments for the entire Mercer family. They won't see the outside of a federal prison for thirty years."
"And the Vale shipping licenses?" Dominic asked quietly.
Vance looked at Claire, then back at Dominic. "Your cooperation in this sting cleared your logistics company of all direct involvement in the precursor smuggling. As far as the Justice Department is concerned, Dominic Vale was an innocent target of an attempted assassination by a rogue syndicate."
Vance tipped his hat to Claire. "Miss Bennett, your sensory report on the Haut-Brion manifests was the key that unlocked their entire laundering scheme. The Director himself asked me to convey his gratitude."
"I just wanted the truth out, Agent Vance," Claire said tiredly.
Vance nodded and walked away to join his team of agents cataloging the evidence crates.
Claire looked toward the armored transport van parked forty yards away. Evelyn Mercer was being led inside, handcuffed at the wrists and ankles, wearing an orange orange prison jumpsuit over her ruined designer clothes.
Evelyn stopped before stepping into the van, turning her head to look across the pier at Claire and Dominic.
Dominic didn't look at her. He didn't offer her a final glance or a gesture of triumph. To him, Evelyn Mercer had already ceased to exist.
He turned toward Claire, extending his hand to help her down from the SUV tailgate.
Claire took his hand, stepping down onto the wet gravel. "It's over."
"For the Mercers, yes," Dominic said softly, his gray eyes fixing on hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "For us, it is just beginning."
Claire looked down at her bandage-wrapped right hand. "My life in the city is gone, Dominic. Even if my name is cleared, the high-society clubs will view me as a liability. I'm the woman who brought down a Senator and survived a mob boss's cellar."
"You are not going back to serving wine to arrogant politicians in velvet dining rooms, Claire," Dominic said, his baritone voice dropping into a low, intimate register that sent a shiver through her chest. "I built an empire on logistics, shipping, and security. But I built it surrounded by snakes and traitors."
He stepped closer, his broad frame blocking the cold river wind.
"I need someone beside me who can see through the lies," Dominic continued, reaching out to gently touch her cheek with the back of his fingers. "Someone with an absolute sense of truth. Someone who saved my life when everyone else in that room was waiting for me to die."
Claire felt her heart pounding in her chest, not from fear, but from a sudden, dizzying realization. "What are you offering me, Mr. Vale?"
"Call me Dominic," he murmured, his eyes locking onto hers. "I am offering you complete control over my international import divisions. Every vineyard, every luxury estate, every shipping container that passes through my ports will answer to you. You will be my Chief Operating Officer—and my equal."
May you like
Claire stared at him, her lips parting in shock. "Your equal?"
"I don't need a servant, Claire," Dominic said, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "I need a partner."
