Chapter 2 - The Cipher in the Apron

The ballroom exploded into utter chaos.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, his heavy jaw set in rage, his voice booming over the din. “Ethan! Have you lost your mind?! You are embarrassing my daughter and insulting my family in front of our investors! Lower that microphone this instant!”

“Sit down, Arthur,” I snapped, my tone so sharp that the older billionaire actually paused in his tracks.

I gestured to my personal estate detail—four former Special Forces operators I had hired personally after my father’s mysterious death six months ago. “Close the gates. Lock down every exit. No one steps out of this house until I give the order.”

My guards moved instantly, sealing the massive mahogany double doors and drawing their sidearms to keep Sterling’s men at bay.

Paramedics burst through the side entrance three minutes later, kneeling beside Clara. As they carefully stabilized her neck and lifted her onto a gurney, she grabbed my sleeve one last time, her eyes burning through her pain.

“The folder... marked 'Projekt Aletheia',” she wheezed out. “The encryption key... is my student ID number.”

I nodded slowly, leaning down. “Thank you, Clara. You’re safe now.”

As they wheeled Clara out toward the waiting ambulance, Victoria tried to march past me toward the elevator, her father flanking her. “This is insane! Ethan, you are having a mental breakdown! I am leaving!”

“You aren't going anywhere, Victoria,” I said, stepping directly into her path.

I slid the cracked micro SD card into a portable reader plugged into my tablet, which was synced directly to the ballroom's primary wall-sized projection screen.

For months, I had been investigating the strange, sudden car crash that took my father’s life—a crash that left me as the sole heir to Vance Global Logistics, a company worth twelve billion dollars. My father had been opposing a hostile takeover by Sterling Dynamics. Three weeks after his death, Victoria Sterling had entered my life, comforting me, guiding me, and quickly leading me down the aisle.

I had believed it was fate. I had believed she loved me.

But Clara wasn't just a housekeeper. She was Clara Vance—my father’s illegitimate daughter from a relationship he had kept hidden twenty years ago to protect her from his business rivals. Before my father died, he had given Clara access to his most secure private servers. She had taken the job in my house to protect me, to monitor the snake I had brought into my bed.

On the massive forty-foot display screen behind the stage, the decryption bar completed.

Files began opening automatically.

Audio logs. Bank transfers. High-resolution surveillance photos.

A collective scream echoed through the room as an audio recording began playing through the high-end sound system.

It was Victoria’s voice. Clear, crisp, and completely devoid of humanity.

“Make sure the brake lines on Charles Vance’s vehicle are severed cleanly,” Victoria’s recorded voice echoed through the ballroom. “It needs to look like an mechanical failure on the canyon road. Once Charles is dead, Ethan will be completely unraveled. I’ll marry him within six months, sign over the Vance Logistics shipping codes to my father, and then we’ll arrange Ethan’s 'overdose'.”
