Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The aftermath in the grand ballroom was swift and brutal.

While Victoria was being dragged out through the rear exit in handcuffs, Arthur Sterling was placed under arrest in the center of the ballroom floor in full view of his former business partners and political allies.

His lawyers were already frantically shouting into their phones, but the evidence decrypted from Clara’s micro SD card was absolute. It contained twenty years of black-budget records, illegal arms sales, political bribery, and orchestrations of political assassinations across three continents.

By midnight, the mansion had been cleared of guests. The media had arrived outside the heavy wrought-iron gates of the Bel-Air estate, their news helicopters circling overhead, their floodlights cutting through the misty night sky.

I sat on the steps of the grand staircase—the same staircase where Clara had fallen four hours ago—holding a cup of cold black coffee.

Agent Vance walked over, sliding his hands into his coat pockets, sitting down on the marble step beside me.

“Clara is out of surgery,” he said softly.

I snapped my head up, my heart leaping into my throat. “Is she going to make it?”

“Broken collarbone, three cracked ribs, and a severe concussion,” Marcus sighed, looking up at the high ceilings. “But the doctors say she’s going to make a full recovery. She’s tough, Ethan. She takes after your father.”

I let out a long, ragged breath I felt like I had been holding for months. I buried my face in my hands, the sheer weight of the night finally crashing over me.

“I almost married her, Marcus,” I whispered, my voice breaking in the quiet hall. “I brought the woman who murdered my father into this house. I kissed her. I trusted her.”

“She was a trained operative, Ethan,” Marcus said gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. “The Sterling family has been doing this for thirty years. They find vulnerable heirs, isolate them, and consume their assets. You weren't her first victim, but thanks to Clara—and thanks to you—you’re the last one.”

He stood up, reaching into his pocket, and handed me a small, sealed plastic evidence bag containing a second drive that had been recovered from Arthur Sterling’s vault during a concurrent federal raid on their corporate headquarters.

“What’s this?” I asked, frowning.

“That,” Marcus said with a dark expression, “is the master key to Vance Logistics’ missing overseas accounts. And the full list of every corrupt official in Washington who helped the Sterlings cover up your father’s murder.”
