Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

Five years later.

The high-rise penthouse overlooking the Manhattan skyline was quiet, illuminated by the warm, golden glow of the setting sun over the Hudson River.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows revealed the sprawling metropolis below—the docks, the shipping lanes, the towering skyscrapers that formed the heart of the Moretti empire.

In the private library of the penthouse, twenty-two-year-old Charlotte Whitmore sat at an antique mahogany desk, reviewing a series of archival manuscripts from Columbia University, where she was completing her Master's degree in Historical Economics.

She wore an elegant cream silk blouse, her dark hair pinned back neat and sleek, her left hand resting on the desk.

On her finger shone a brilliant, flawless diamond engagement ring, set alongside her silver sapphire bracelet.

The heavy oak doors of the library pushed open softly.

Damian stepped inside. At twenty-two, he was the undisputed leader of the Midwest logistics network, a man spoken of with immense reverence and fear across three continents. He wore a dark grey tailored suit, his coat unbuttoned, his signet ring catching the golden light of the sunset.

He walked across the soft rug, stopping behind Charlotte’s chair, leaning down to press a soft kiss against the side of her neck.

"You're working late, Dr. Whitmore," Damian murmured, his voice rich and deep, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind.

"I'm reviewing the port foundation grants for next quarter," Charlotte smiled, leaning her head back against his chest. "We're funding two hundred full academic scholarships for public school students in the city."

"Good," Damian said softly, resting his chin on her shoulder, looking out at the city skyline with her. "Let them build their own foundations."

Charlotte reached up, her fingers locking into his, her thumb tracing the familiar, tiny scar near his knuckle.

"Do you ever think about Blackwood?" she asked softly.

"Sometimes," Damian admitted, looking down at her hazel eyes. "I think about a girl sitting on a dirty bathroom floor, refusing to cry."

"And what do you think when you remember her?" Charlotte teased gently, turning her face to look at him.

Damian smiled—that rare, breathtaking smile reserved only for her—and leaned down, pressing his lips gently against hers in a long, deep, quiet kiss that smelled of sandalwood, rain, and absolute devotion.

"I think," Damian whispered against her lips, "that she was the best deal I ever made in my entire life."

Outside the high windows, the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, brilliant ribbons of gold across the river, illuminating the empire they had built together—unbroken, sovereign, and safe forever.
