Chapter 8 - The Queen's Ascent

When the car pulled up to the Moretti estate that evening, the gates were guarded by eight armed men in full tactical gear. The house was illuminated from top to bottom, dark luxury vehicles lining the sweeping circular driveway.
Charlotte walked through the front doors, her head held high, wearing her simple black dress and her silver sapphire bracelet.
The grand foyer was filled with twenty high-ranking men—captains, syndicate lawyers, and business executives—all speaking in hushed, serious tones.
The moment Charlotte stepped into the foyer, the quiet conversations instantly died out.
The men turned to look at her. They didn't look at her with contempt or curiosity. They looked at her with absolute, solemn respect. Word of her standing up to Evelyn Caldwell and her calm handling of the Valetti attempt in the parking lot had already reached the high council.
At the top of the grand staircase stood Damian.
He wore a bespoke double-breasted black suit, a silver signet ring shining on his right pinky finger—the official ring of the Moretti Don.
When he saw Charlotte standing at the foot of the stairs, the hard, unyielding expression on his face instantly melted into a look of deep, overwhelming relief.
He walked down the marble steps quickly, stopping right in front of her.
"Charlotte," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Are you unhurt? Marco told me about the parking lot—"
"I'm fine, Damian," Charlotte interrupted gently, reaching up to lay her palm against his cheek. "Your men were right on time."
Damian leaned into her touch, closing his eyes for a brief second, allowing himself to be a seventeen-year-old boy in her hands before the entire world.
"They tried to use you," Damian growled, his eyes opening, burning with dark fire. "The Valettis thought they could find a vulnerability in my life. I had their entire executive board arrested or removed by 4:00 AM today."
"I know," Charlotte smiled softly. "You built the structure."
Damian looked at her hand resting against his cheek, then down at the silver sapphire bracelet shining on her wrist. He reached out, taking her hand in his, and turned to face the twenty captains standing in the foyer below.
"Listen to me!" Damian's voice boomed across the grand hall, carrying absolute, unquestioned authority. "This is Charlotte Whitmore. She speaks with my voice. Whatever she commands, it is as if I commanded it myself. If anyone ever threatens her, disrespects her, or approaches her without my permission, they answer to me personally."
The twenty captains bowed their heads in unison.

"Understood, Don Damian!" they answered as one.
Charlotte looked at the men, then up at Damian, feeling an electric thrill run down her spine. She wasn't just a scholarship student who had survived Blackwood. She was standing beside the most powerful man in the state, bound to him not by fear or money, but by a quiet, unbreakable trust forged on a bathroom floor.
