Chapter 8 - The Public Apology

The main lobby of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was packed with people.
Reporters from every major local news station, photojournalists with flashing cameras, and curious onlookers were gathered behind a red velvet rope line set up by private security personnel. News vans with satellite dishes were parked five-deep along the street outside.
At 8:55 AM, a sleek, black luxury SUV pulled up to the front entrance.
Marcus opened the rear door, and Victor stepped out, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray suit. He turned and extended a hand, gently helping Della down. Della was dressed in a simple, elegant navy blue maternity dress provided by Victor’s personal stylists, her hair styled in soft waves, her bandaged right hand resting comfortably against her side.
As they walked into the hospital lobby, the flashbulbs went off in a blinding flurry.
"Mr. Ross! Is it true that Vance Logistics had its contracts revoked?!" "Della! How is the baby doing after the incident at the Ashworth Grand?!" "Is Councilman Vance resigning today?!"
Victor ignored the sea of microphones thrust into his face, keeping one protective arm lightly positioned behind Della’s back to shield her from the press crowd.
Standing in the center of the lobby, under the bright lights of four television broadcast cameras, were Cordelia Vance and Julian Vance.
Cordelia looked like a shadow of her former self. Her expensive silk dress was gone, replaced by a plain, drab grey outfit. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying all night, her face pale, without a trace of makeup. Beside her, Julian stood with his head bowed, looking utterly defeated.
When Victor and Della approached, the room fell into a heavy, expectant quiet. The camera operators adjusted their lenses, broadcasting the scene live to hundreds of thousands of viewers across the state.
Cordelia looked at Victor, her body shaking. Victor simply gave her a cold, single nod.
Slowly, painfully, Cordelia sank down onto her knees on the cold, hard hospital floor.
The press crowd gasped softly, camera shutters clicking furiously. A wealthy heiress like Cordelia Vance kneeling on a public floor was a scene no one in the city had ever expected to witness.
Cordelia looked up at Della, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, her voice trembling violently as she spoke into the microphone held near her face.
"Della... Miss Marsh," Cordelia whimpered, her hands trembling in her lap. "I... I am deeply, profoundly sorry for what I did to you last night at the Ashworth Grand. I was arrogant, reckless, and cruel. I put your life and the life of your unborn child in grave danger out of pure vanity."
She swallowed hard, sobbing softly as she swallowed the ultimate humiliation.
"I had no right to lay hands on you. You are a better person than I could ever hope to be. I ask for your forgiveness, though I know I do not deserve it. I will accept full legal responsibility for my actions, and I will spend the rest of my life trying to make amends for the harm I caused."
The silence in the grand hall was absolute.
Della looked down at the woman kneeling before her. Last night, Cordelia had looked like a giant, an untouchable queen of high society who could crush Della’s life without a second thought. But today, standing under the protection of Victor Ross, Della saw Cordelia for what she truly was: a fragile, spoiled child whose power was built on nothing but illusion and daddy's money.
Della took a step forward, looking down at Cordelia with calm, quiet dignity.
"I accept your apology, Miss Vance," Della said, her clear voice picked up by the news microphones. "I don't hold hate in my heart for you. But I hope today teaches you that every human being, no matter what they wear or what job they do, deserves dignity and respect."
Della turned away, refusing to prolong Cordelia's public execution.
"Take me home, Victor," Della whispered softly.
Victor looked down at her, his eyes filled with profound respect and admiration for her grace under pressure. "With pleasure, Della."

As Victor escorted Della back toward the SUV, Marcus stepped up to the microphone, speaking clearly to the assembled media.
"Councilman Arthur Vance will be releasing an official statement regarding his immediate resignation from public office at eleven o'clock," Marcus announced coldly. "Thank you all for coming."
