Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Ten minutes later, Michael’s Maybach tore through the empty streets of Manhattan, its black security escort vehicles flashing silent blue lights as they sped toward the Fifth Avenue flagship store.
Inside the car, Sarah sat stiffly in the leather seat, her velvet skirt spread around her, her fingers tightly laced in her lap.
Michael sat beside her. He reached out, covering her hands with his own, his thumb rubbing smooth, reassuring circles over her knuckles.
“Stop shaking, Sarah,” Michael murmured softly.
“How can I stop shaking?” Sarah whispered, tears finally slipping down her cheeks. “If those gowns aren't found, I’ll be arrested. Leo... my mother... everything we’ve built over the last month will be destroyed.”
“Nothing is going to be destroyed,” Michael said, his voice flat with absolute conviction. “I told you before: I don't make mistakes in human investment. I know who you are, Sarah. A thousand Victoria Sterlings couldn't convince me otherwise.”
Sarah looked at him through her tears, overwhelmed by the fierce, unwavering faith in his eyes. For years, she had been the sole protector of her family, carrying every burden alone. To have a powerful man stand between her and destruction was a feeling so foreign it made her heart ache.
When they arrived at Brooks & Co., the grand flagship store was entirely locked down. Armed corporate security guards stood at every entrance, their dark suits sharp under the streetlights.
Michael guided Sarah through the main lobby and up the private executive elevator directly to Floor Three.
Marcus—a broad-shouldered, sharp-eyed former intelligence officer who served as Michael’s head of security—was waiting outside the haute couture vault.
Beside him stood two police detectives and a terrified-looking night security guard.
“Report, Marcus,” Michael commanded as he stepped off the elevator, still holding Sarah’s hand.
“The breach was internal, sir,” Marcus reported smoothly, holding up an encrypted tablet. “Miss Sterling’s desk key was used to open Miss Carter’s office drawers at six-fifteen p.m. Miss Sterling’s personal assistant, Chloe, was captured on private hallway cameras taking Miss Carter’s key fob, duplicating its RFID code using a handheld cloner, and returning the original fob to the desk.”
Victoria, who had been escorted up by two guards behind them, gasped, stumbling back against the wall. “That’s... that’s a lie! Chloe acted on her own!”
“We checked Chloe’s personal bank account ten minutes ago, Miss Sterling,” Marcus continued calmly. “A wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars was deposited into her account from an offshore shell company registered under your husband’s name at four o'clock this afternoon.”
The room went dead silent.
The two police detectives stepped forward, pulling pair of steel handcuffs from their belts.
“Victoria Sterling,” the lead detective said coldly. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate conspiracy, and filing a false police report.”
Victoria panicked, her composure shattering completely. “Michael! Please! I did it for the brand! She doesn't belong here! She’s a nobody from Queens! She was ruining the prestige of Floor Three!”
Michael didn't even look at Victoria as the detectives handcuffed her wrists behind her back and led her, sobbing and screaming, toward the service elevator.
Marcus pulled three long garment bags from a secure transport cart near the vault.
“The stolen gowns were recovered from the trunk of Miss Sterling’s car in the executive garage, sir,” Marcus added. “Zero damage to the merchandise.”
Michael nodded once. “Good work, Marcus. Clear the floor.”
Within two minutes, the security team, police officers, and staff had evacuated the third floor, leaving Michael and Sarah standing alone amidst the dimmed spotlights and velvet display sofas.
Sarah let out a long, shaky breath, her knees suddenly feeling so weak she had to grab the edge of a mahogany display table to keep from falling.
Michael was beside her instantly, his strong hands catching her waist and lifting her effortlessly until she was sitting on the edge of the high mahogany table, bringing her eyes level with his.
“I’ve got you,” Michael whispered, his hands remaining on her waist, his thumbs resting against the soft velvet of her gown.
Sarah looked down into his dark eyes, her breath catching as she realized how close he was. His face was inches from hers, his broad shoulders blocking out the entire world, his warmth seeping through her dress.
“You trusted me,” Sarah breathed, her hand reaching up instinctively to touch his crisp collar. “Even when the video showed my key... you didn't doubt me for a second.”

“I told you, Sarah,” Michael murmured, his dark voice filled with a fierce, tender gravity as he leaned closer, his lips brushing against her temple. “I know who you are. And I am never letting anyone hurt you again.”
Sarah closed her eyes as his lips slid down to her cheek, then gently, deliberately pressed against her own, initiating a deep, consuming kiss that swept away every remaining shred of fear, coldness, and doubt from her heart.
