Chapter 8 - The Morning After

The news of Victoria Sterling’s arrest sent shockwaves through New York’s high-fashion and retail elite.
By Monday morning, every major newspaper and industry trade site was reporting on the dramatic downfall of Brooks & Co.’s veteran floor director. But even more prominent were the stories detailing the extraordinary intelligence and composure of Sarah Carter—the young visual coordinator who had not only saved Lady Helena’s Paris outfit but had also helped expose a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar corporate framing plot.
When Sarah arrived at the flagship store on Monday morning, wearing a chic navy suit provided by the executive styling team, the atmosphere on Floor Three had completely changed.
The staff—sales associates, tailors, and stock clerks—looked at her not with condescension, but with profound respect. They knew she had refused to break under Victoria’s tyranny, and they knew Michael Brooks backed her with an absolute, unshakeable authority.
At ten o'clock, Sarah was summoned to the executive boardroom on the eighth floor.
Inside, the entire board of directors sat around the massive walnut table, flanked by high-definition presentation screens. Michael sat at the head of the table, looking sharp, formidable, and entirely in control.
“Miss Carter,” Michael said smoothly as she walked in. “Please take a seat.”
Sarah sat at the foot of the table, holding a black leather notebook.
“Given the recent vacancy in leadership on Floor Three,” Michael announced to the board, his voice carrying across the quiet room, “and considering the extraordinary operational efficiency, client satisfaction metrics, and visual design growth recorded over the last month, I am officially proposing Sarah Carter for the position of Senior Director of Visual Merchandising and Operations for the Fifth Avenue Flagship.”
A murmur of agreement rippled through the older board members.
Arthur Vance smiled broadly, tapping his pen on the table. “Seconded! Helena will throw a party when she hears this. Miss Carter has brought life back to that showroom.”
“The promotion includes an annual compensation package of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars,” Michael continued, looking directly into Sarah’s wide gray eyes, “along with full executive equity options and a permanent position on the brand’s creative council.”
The motion passed unanimously in less than two minutes.
After the board members filed out of the room, offering Sarah their warm congratulations, Sarah remained seated, staring down at her notebook in absolute stunned silence.
Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Executive equity. Senior Director.
Michael walked down the length of the long walnut table, stopping behind her chair. He leaned down, placing his hands on her shoulders, resting his chin near her ear.
“You earned every bit of it, Senior Director Carter,” Michael whispered softly.
Sarah reached up, pressing her hand over his. “Michael... a month ago, I couldn't afford a twenty-dollar meal. Now I’m managing the most famous luxury floor in America.”
“A month ago, you were hiding your genius behind catering trays because life hadn't given you a fair chance,” Michael corrected her gently, turning her chair around so she faced him. He knelt on one knee before her, holding both of her hands in his. “You built this path yourself, Sarah. I just unlocked the door.”
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and opened it.
Inside sat a simple, breathtaking platinum ring set with a brilliant midnight-blue sapphire, surrounded by a delicate halo of small diamonds that resembled frost embroidery.
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. “Michael...”
“This isn't a proposal,” Michael murmured, his dark eyes filled with a raw, intense sincerity that made her eyes fill with happy tears. “Not yet. It’s a promise. A promise that no matter how high you rise, you will never have to face the cold alone again.”

He slid the sapphire ring onto her right ring finger. It fit perfectly.
Sarah looked down at the blue stone shimmering on her hand, then threw her arms around his neck, pulling him close as she buried her face in his neck, whispering her love into his skin.
