Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Blackwood

Three months later, the Blackwood estate was transformed.
The dismal rain of autumn had given way to a crisp, clear winter morning. Snow dusted the manicured lawns and high stone turrets of the mansion, glinting like diamonds under a brilliant blue sky. Down in the subterranean levels, the illegal tunnel breaches had been filled with solid, reinforced steel-concrete, and a state-of-the-art AI-driven security array monitored every square foot of the property under the direct supervision of Marcus and a fully vetted tactical team.
In the grand dining room on the first floor, sunlight poured through towering arched windows.
Maya sat at the long mahogany table, wearing a dark green wool sweater and tailored slacks. A sleek silver laptop was open in front of her, displaying high-level economics research papers for her upcoming mid-term exams at the city’s premier university. Beside her laptop sat a notebook filled with precise, organized notes on corporate governance—a subject she was mastering with staggering speed under Ethan’s direct mentorship.
The heavy doors opened, and Ethan walked in, holding two steaming mugs of dark roasted coffee.
He walked over to her side, placing one mug gently on a coaster beside her books before leaning down to press a soft kiss to her temple.
"You've been studying since six in the morning," Ethan noted smoothly, settling into the chair beside her. "Don't make me fire you from studying."
Maya chuckled, looking up from her screen to sip the warm coffee. "I have an exam on international market regulations tomorrow. And unlike some people, I don't own the university."
"Yet," Ethan teased gently, a soft smile playing on his lips.
The quiet moment was interrupted as Noah walked into the room, holding a sleek digital clipboard. His recovery from the shock dart injury had been swift, and he now served as Ethan's primary executive assistant alongside Marcus.
"Mr. Blackwood," Noah reported professionally, though his tone was light. "The final legal proceedings regarding Vanguard Holdings were completed this morning in federal court. The corporate entity has been fully dissolved, and all assets connected to Davenport's offshore accounts have been seized and redirected into the staff welfare fund."
"Good," Ethan said, his voice firm. "Make sure every remaining staff member on this estate receives their updated pension guarantees by the end of the week."
"Already done, sir," Noah smiled, nodding respectfully to Maya before exiting the grand room.
Maya looked over at Ethan, her eyes full of quiet admiration. Over the past ninety days, she had watched him dismantle every toxic element of his family's corporate structure, replacing fear and opacity with absolute accountability and care for the people who kept his world running.
"You changed everything," Maya murmured softly, reaching out across the table to slip her fingers into his.
Ethan looked down at her small, strong hand intertwined with his.
"You changed everything, Maya," Ethan corrected her softly, his grey eyes filled with a deep, unwavering affection. "If you hadn't stayed awake... if you hadn't fought through that night and trusted me with the truth, this house would still be living in the shadows."
Maya looked out the grand glass windows at the snow falling softly over the estate grounds.
The terror of the thirty-six-hour shift, the bitter tea, the dark subterranean tunnels, and the cold threat of Vane's weapon felt like a distant, bad dream. In its place was a reality she had never dared to imagine: a life of purpose, education, security, and a deep, unbreakable bond with the man who had sworn to protect her.
She squeezed Ethan’s hand, feeling the solid, unwavering warmth of his presence beside her.

"No more secrets," Maya said softly, looking back at him with a clear, radiant smile.
"No more secrets," Ethan agreed, pulling her hand to his lips. "And no more night shifts."
