Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The elevator ride back up to the main house felt like an eternity. Maya stood inside the polished metallic cab, her hands clutching her cardigan tight against her chest, watching the floor numbers light up slowly: Sub-Level 2... Sub-Level 1... Ground Floor... Third Floor.

Noah stood beside her, his hand resting on the grip of his holstered weapon, his eyes scanning the elevator ceiling hatch nervously.

"We'll secure you in the master suite," Noah said, his tone professional but tense. "Mr. Blackwood’s private suite has reinforced steel doors and an independent security feed that can't be tampered with from the staff offices."

As the elevator doors slid open on the third floor, the quiet luxury of the house stood in stark, bizarre contrast to the wet, dark mine shafts beneath them. Warm wall sconces cast golden light over silent marble corridors, thick carpets muffled their footsteps, and pristine oil paintings hung peacefully along the walls.

They stepped out into the quiet hallway.

Suddenly, the floor beneath them violently shuddered.

A deep, muffled explosion echoed from deep within the structure of the house—not loud enough to shatter the windows on the third floor, but a low, concussive rumble that sent a tremor through the walls. Instantly, every emergency light along the hallway turned from warm yellow to flashing, harsh crimson.

A mechanical siren began to wail overhead, a high-pitched automated voice repeating calmly over the speaker system: SECURITY BREACH AT SUB-LEVEL ARCHIVE VAULT. AUTOMATIC CONTAINMENT PROTOCOL ENGAGED.

"They blew the charges," Noah muttered, drawing his weapon immediately. "Stay behind me!"

"Ethan!" Maya cried out, turning back toward the elevator with sheer terror in her chest.

"Mr. Blackwood can handle himself," Noah said, pulling her firmly down the corridor toward the heavy double doors of the master suite. "Our orders are to lock you down!"

Before Noah could reach the door handle, a shadow stepped out from the darkened archway near the secondary stairwell.

It was a tall man, clad in tactical black gear, wearing a dark face mask and holding a short-barreled suppressed submachine gun. He didn't hesitate. Before Noah could raise his sidearm, the intruder fired two quick, whisper-quiet shots.

Noah gasped, dropping his weapon as the non-lethal high-voltage shock taser darts struck him directly in the chest, sending thousands of volts surging through his body. He collapsed heavily to the carpeted floor, his muscles spasming helplessly.

Maya screamed, backing away down the long corridor, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

The tall intruder stepped over Noah’s squirming body, pulling down his black face mask to reveal a calm, cold face with a jagged scar running along his jawline.

"Maya Collins," the man said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "You've caused quite a bit of trouble for a girl who was supposed to be fast asleep in her quarters."

Maya hit the back wall, her hands scraping against the wallpaper. "Who are you?"

"My name is Vane," the man said smoothly, raising the weapon slightly. "And you were supposed to be simple collateral damage. Mrs. Davenport swore you were an ignorant girl who wouldn't notice a thing if we kept you tired enough. But you just couldn't stop looking around, could you?"

Maya’s eyes darted past him toward the service stairs, calculating the distance. "Ethan knows you're down there," she said, trying to buy time, her voice shaking violently. "His security detail is surrounding the lower tunnels!"

Vane let out a cold, sharp laugh. "You think the explosion downstairs was to break into the vault? Mr. Blackwood is currently trapped behind three tons of collapsed stone in the lower mine shaft. The charge wasn't set to break in—it was set to seal the entrance, locking his team in the cavern while my men sweep the upper house for what we actually came for."

Maya’s blood ran ice-cold. Ethan was trapped.

Vane reached into his tactical vest, pulling out a small silver digital drive mounted on a reinforced steel chassis. "The vault controls aren't kept in the basement, Maya. They're kept right here in Ethan Blackwood's private third-floor study. And now that he's buried alive underground, no one is left to stop us from downloading every private corporate key his family owns."

He stepped closer, his heavy tactical boots silent on the carpet. "And as for you... you know far too much to be left alive as a witness."

Vane raised the suppressed weapon, pointing it directly at Maya's chest.

Maya didn't think. Driven by pure, primal survival instinct, her eyes locked onto a heavy bronze decorative vase sitting on a mahogany pedestal right next to her hand.

As Vane pulled the trigger, Maya grabbed the bronze vase and swung it with all her remaining strength directly into his face.

The heavy bronze struck Vane squarely across the cheek with a loud CRACK. The shock dart discharged uselessly into the wall behind her, embedding itself into the plaster. Vane stumbled back, cursing loudly as blood welled from a gash on his cheek.

Maya didn't wait to see if he recovered. She turned and sprinted down the long, carpeted corridor as fast as her exhausted legs could carry her, disappearing into the dark service stairwell of the upper house.
