Chapter 10 - The View from the Top

The penthouse suite on the fiftieth floor of The Vance Grand Miami was bathed in moonlight.
It was 1:00 AM. The party downstairs had finally wound down, and the quiet sound of the ocean breeze filled the expansive room.
Evelyn sat on the plush velvet sofa on the balcony, her high heels kicked off, taking a long, relaxing breath. Her laptop was open on the small glass table before her, displaying the overnight financial markets and global hotel reservation metrics.
Her phone chimed on the table.
It was a text message from an unknown number. She clicked on it.
It was a photograph sent from a small diner in Memphis. Grant was sitting at a Formica counter in a faded denim jacket, eating a cheap meal alone under fluorescent lights. Below the photo was a simple text message:
I saw you on the news tonight in Miami. You looked incredible. I'm sorry for everything, Evie. - Grant
Evelyn stared at the message for a long moment.
Six months ago, a message like that might have brought tears to her eyes, or a wave of bitter anger, or a deep ache in her chest.
Now, she felt nothing at all.
She didn't feel hatred. She didn't feel vengeance. She felt only a quiet, profound peace—the peace that comes when you finally realize that some people were only ever meant to be a chapter in your story, not the whole book.
Evelyn slowly tapped the screen, selected the contact settings, and pressed BLOCK THIS NUMBER.
She closed the messaging app, shut her laptop, and stood up, looking out over the vast, sparkling lights of the Miami coastline stretching as far as the eye could see.
She touched the narrow gold band around her wrist, feeling the cool, polished rubies under her thumb.

"Thank you, Grandma," Evelyn whispered into the warm night breeze.
She turned and walked inside her penthouse suite, shutting the balcony door behind her, leaving the past behind in the dark, and stepping gracefully into her brilliant, unstoppable future.
