Chapter 3 - The Ledger

For the next four months, Clara’s life transformed completely.

She didn't spend her days shopping on Michigan Avenue like the other mob wives; she spent them in Dante’s study, surrounded by stack after stack of complex financial ledgers, international shipping manifests, and offshore portfolio statements.

She discovered that Dante’s empire was vast, covering legitimate real estate, logistics, import-export firms, and private security. But it was also riddled with subtle inefficiencies and quiet embezzlement from his own captains.

Within six weeks, Clara had identified three million dollars in leaked revenue coming from the South Side docks.

"Who manages Pier 14?" Clara asked one evening, sliding a revised ledger across Dante’s mahogany desk.

Dante picked up the paper, his dark brows pulling together as he scanned her precise red ink annotations. "Uncle Vincenzo. My father's younger brother. He’s handled the port union for twelve years."

"He's siphoning five percent off every container shipment passing through the terminal," Clara said calmly, taking a sip of her tea. "He’s masking it as 'dock worker insurance fees,' but the money is being routed to a personal trust in the Cayman Islands."

Dante looked up from the paper, his eyes dark with a mix of cold rage and profound respect. "My accountants missed this for three years."

"Your accountants were looking at the total balances," Clara explained, leaning forward. "I looked at the fuel consumption metrics versus the tonnage moved. The numbers didn't match. He was lying about the weight of the cargo."

Dante stared at her for a long moment. Over the last four months, he had watched her work with an intensity that fascinated him. She was brilliant, thorough, and utterly fearless when it came to numbers.

He had also watched her change.

Under the care of his estate staff, she was eating well, no longer skipping meals out of shame. Her skin had acquired a healthy, radiant glow. Her lush curves, which she used to hide under baggy cardigans, were now elegantly draped in dark silk dresses that Dante had personally ordered for her.

She was breathtaking, though she still seemed oblivious to her own beauty.

"Vincenzo will be dealt with tonight," Dante said, his voice quiet and deadly. "Matteo will take over the pier logistics tomorrow morning."

"Dante," Clara said softly, reaching across the desk to place her hand over his. Her skin felt small and warm against his massive, scarred knuckle. "Be careful. Vincenzo has deep ties with the North Side families."

Dante looked down at her hand on his. Over the past few months, their physical contact had remained lingering and warm—gentle touches on the lower back, hands held during formal dinners, a soft kiss on her temple every night before she went to her private adjoining bedroom. But the tension between them was growing, a thick, smoldering heat that neither of them had explicitly addressed.

Dante turned his hand over, intertwining his long fingers with hers. "No one touches what is mine, Clara. Especially not family."

He lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles slowly, his dark gray eyes never leaving hers. A violent tremor of heat shot straight down Clara’s spine, making her pulse jump wildly.

"You've worked fourteen hours today," Dante murmured, his thumb stroking the soft back of her wrist. "Go to sleep."

"Dante..." she breathed, her heart hammering.

May you like

"Go, Clara," he said gently, though his eyes burned with a dark, suppressed hunger. "Before I forget the promise I made to you on our wedding night."

Clara swallowed hard, her body flushed with a sudden, overwhelming desire she had never felt before. She nodded silently, pulled her hand back, and retreated to her room, her mind filled with the memory of his lips against her skin.
