Chapter 5 - The First Crack in the Armor

The rain was pouring in sheets against the high arched windows of the Moretti estate when they returned at 2:00 AM.
Harper was exhausted, her feet aching from the high heels, her mind reeling from the endless parade of mob bosses, corrupt judges, and wealthy businessmen she had been forced to smile at all evening. Yet, underneath the exhaustion, a strange, electric high was running through her veins. She had stood up to Frankie DeLuca. She hadn't collapsed.
In the dimly lit foyer, Dominic helped her take off her velvet cloak.
"You were incredible tonight," he said, his voice lower than usual. He smelled faintly of scotch and cigar smoke. "Frankie looked like he wanted to swallow his own tongue when you spoke to Gina."
"I was terrified," Harper confessed, leaning against the marble banister, looking up at him. "My hands were shaking so hard under my dress."
"No one saw it," Dominic said, stepping closer. "You carried yourself like a queen."
He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the smooth line of her jawbone. His touch lingered, sliding down the side of her neck, resting over the rapid pulse beating at the base of her throat.
Harper didn't pull away. Her breath hitched, her eyes fixing on his mouth. For the first time since they had met, she realized how close they were standing. The house was dead quiet. The dark, dangerous man who controlled half the city was standing inches away, his breathing as heavy and uneven as hers.
"Harper," he murmured, his grey eyes darkening into deep storm clouds. "If you don't want me to kiss you, you need to step back right now."
Harper swallowed hard. Her body felt hot, heavy, and hyper-aware of every point of contact. She thought about her old life—the cold apartment, the fear, the endless disrespect from men like Paul DeLuca. Then she looked at Dominic—a man who had protected her, honored her, and looked at her curves not with judgment, but with an intense, reverent hunger.
Instead of stepping back, Harper took a small half-step forward.
Dominic let out a low growl. His hand came up, wrapping around the back of her head, his fingers tangling into her dark hair as he pulled her mouth up to his.
The kiss was explosive.
It wasn't gentle or polite. It was hard, hungry, and demanding, the built-up tension of the last four days exploding between them in a single second. Dominic pulled her flush against his body, his arm wrapping around her waist like an iron band, lifting her slightly off her feet. Harper gasped into his mouth, her arms flying around his neck, her fingers digging into his thick hair.
He tasted like smoke, oak scotch, and pure danger.
Dominic groaned, pressing her back against the wooden banister, his hips pinning hers against the rail. His hands slid down the heavy velvet of her dress, gripping her wide hips with a possessive strength that made Harper’s knees turn to liquid.
"God, Harper," he muttered against her lips, his breath hot on her neck as he dragged his mouth down to the sensitive skin beneath her ear. "You're driving me insane. Do you have any idea what it’s been like watching you walk around my house?"
"Dominic..." she gasped, arching her back as his lips burned a path down her collarbone.
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic ring cut through the quiet foyer.
Dominic froze. His forehead rested against her shoulder, his chest heaving as he fought for breath.
The phone in his pocket rang again. A secure satellite line.
Slowly, reluctantly, Dominic pulled back. His hands lingered on her hips for a second before he reached into his pocket and pulled out the phone. He looked at the caller ID, and his entire face hardened instantly back into the cold mask of the mafia Don.
"Speak," Dominic answered. He listened for five seconds, his jaw setting tightly. "Where? ... Send Marco and four men. I'm on my way."
He hung up and looked at Harper. His eyes were still dark with passion, but the cold reality of his world had reasserted itself.
"A warehouse on 14th Street was set on fire," Dominic said grimly, buttoning his collar. "Frankie’s sending a message."
May you like
"Be careful," Harper said automatically, her heart leaping into her throat with a sudden, sharp fear that had nothing to do with contracts or money.
Dominic stopped. He looked at her face, seeing the genuine panic in her brown eyes. A faint, gentle smile touched his lips. He stepped back in, kissed her forehead softly, and whispered, "Lock your door tonight, Mrs. Moretti. I'll be back before dawn."
