Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hotel was packed with over five hundred guests.

When the double doors opened at 9:00 PM, the announcer’s voice boomed across the room: "Announcing Mrs. Harper Moretti!"

The chatter ceased instantly.

Harper stepped into the ballroom alone. She was wearing a breathtaking emerald-green satin gown that clung dramatically to her hourglass figure, trailing behind her like a river of jewels. Around her neck sat the famous Moretti Emerald—a massive, historic stone surrounded by three carats of diamonds. Her hair was styled in an elegant, towering updo, and her dark eyes swept the room with calm, terrifying confidence.

Behind her, six tall men in dark suits stepped into formation, their hands tucked neatly inside their jackets.

Frankie DeLuca, sitting at a center table surrounded by city councilmen, nearly choked on his champagne. Beside him, Gina DeLuca’s jaw dropped.

Harper walked straight through the center aisle, the crowd parting before her like the Red Sea. She stopped directly in front of Frankie’s table.

"Good evening, Frankie," Harper said, her voice smooth, clear, and loud enough for thirty surrounding tables to hear. "Dominic sends his regrets. He was busy managing the newly acquired shipping contracts at the south port tonight, so he sent me to ensure your union dues are paid on time."

Frankie stood up slowly, his face turning an ugly, mottled purple. "You bold little bitch," he spat under his breath, leaning in. "You think wearing his glass beads makes you untouchable? Dominic is bleeding out in a bed somewhere. By next week, I'll own his house, his ports, and his grave."

Harper didn't flinch. She leaned in closer, until her face was inches from Frankie’s.

"Dominic isn't bleeding, Frankie," she whispered, her voice dropping into an icy, lethal register that made the old mob boss’s spine freeze. "But your chief financial officer, Sal Venturi, certainly is. He’s currently sitting in an interrogation room at the 1st District police station, giving the District Attorney every tax fraud paper your family has signed for twenty years."

Frankie’s eyes widened in pure horror. "What?"

"Dominic didn't spend the last three days recovering," Harper smiled, a beautiful, terrifying expression. "He spent them buying your inner circle. By midnight tonight, the feds will freeze every account tied to the DeLuca name. Have a wonderful evening, Frankie."

She turned on her high heel, her satin gown sweeping gracefully around her ankles, and walked away.

The room erupted into chaos. Phones were pulled out, bodyguards scrambled, and Frankie DeLuca collapsed back into his chair, pale and broken, as three federal agents in trench coats strode through the side doors of the ballroom heading straight for his table.
