Chapter 7 - The Fourteen-Street Terminal

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time the three-car convoy of black armored SUVs pulled up outside the rusted corrugated metal perimeter of the 14th Street Logistics Compound.

Located in the heavy industrial corridor near the Chicago River, the facility was officially listed as a commercial distribution warehouse for imported seafood. In reality, it was the central hub for the Moretti family’s illicit grey-market electronics and data storage operations.

Inside the rear seat of the lead SUV, Gabriel sat quietly while two senior security technicians worked on laptop terminals mounted to the rear of the front seats.

Tessa sat beside him, watching the rain streak down the tinted glass.

"Mr. Vain," one of the technicians spoke up, turning around. "The back door link created by Mr. Julian’s clearance account is active. Someone inside this compound is currently pinging the St. Jude's internal server from an isolated terminal inside the central office."

"Have they initiated the data scrub yet?" Gabriel asked calmly.

"They are running the preliminary index scan right now," the technician replied, pointing at a red progress bar crawling across his screen. "Estimated time to full file overwrite: twelve minutes."

Gabriel glanced at his wristwatch.

4:32 p.m.

"Commander Vance," Gabriel spoke into a small radio mounted to his lapel. "Disable the facility’s exterior power coupling. I want their local servers running on emergency backup before we step through the door."

"Understood, sir," a voice crackled back through the radio.

Three seconds later, the bright halogen floodlights illuminating the perimeter wall of the warehouse flickered twice and died, plunging the compound into gray rain-swept darkness.

CLICK.

Gabriel unbuttoned his suit jacket, reaching into the leather shoulder holster beneath his arm, pulling out a sleek, matte-black semi-automatic pistol. He checked the magazine release with a practiced, silent efficiency, then slid it back into the holster.

Tessa watched him, her breath hitching slightly in her throat.

"Stay in the vehicle, Miss Harper," Gabriel said, reaching for the door handle.

"No," Tessa said firmly.

Gabriel stopped. He turned his head slowly, looking at her with an amused, dark eyebrow raised. "Excuse me?"

"That data scrub involves my brother's life," Tessa said, her voice shaking slightly with residual fear, but her jaw set in an unyielding line. "You need someone who knows the St. Jude's patient portal layout to verify that Sam's actual donor profile hasn't been corrupted before we cut the link. The technical technicians don't know Sam's medical ID numbers."

Gabriel stared at her for two long seconds.

He saw the raw, terrifying courage of a girl who had spent eleven months scrubbing floors to feed her brother, now standing ready to walk into a hornets' nest of armed criminals for the very same reason.

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of Gabriel Vain’s lips.

"If a shot is fired," Gabriel instructed, his voice low and firm, "you drop to the floor and cover your head. Do you understand?"

May you like

"Yes," Tessa agreed instantly.

"Commander," Gabriel said into his lapel radio. "We are moving in."
