Chapter 8 - The Server Room

The side entrance of the warehouse yielded to Marco’s breaching tool with a sharp, metallic CRACK.

Gabriel stepped through the dark, cold doorway first, moving with a fluid, silent grace that belied his six-foot-two frame. Behind him came four broad-shouldered enforcers in tactical gear, followed closely by Tessa.

The interior of the warehouse smelled of wet salt, diesel exhaust, and warm electronic ozone. Row upon row of wooden shipping crates stretched up toward the forty-foot ceiling, lit only by the dull green emergency backup lights overhead.

At the far end of the facility, sitting on a raised steel mezzanine level, was a glass-walled office illuminated by the blue glow of four high-definition computer monitors.

Inside the office, two men were bent over a console.

One was a young, sharp-featured technician wearing headphones; the other was a heavy-set man in his early fifties wearing a leather trench coat—Dominic Moretti’s younger brother and primary lieutenant, Anthony Moretti.

"Fast, clear it fast!" Anthony was barking, pounding his fist on the metal desk. "The main power just cut out! The backup generator only gives us fifteen minutes of stable server time!"

"I'm executing the override string now, boss!" the technician yelled, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "The Vain Trust clearance code passed the hospital firewall! I'm into the pediatric oncology sub-directory!"

On the main monitor screen, folders labeled HARPER, SAMUEL - ID #88492 were flashing red as the scrub program prepared to rewrite the file headers.

BANG.

The heavy steel door of the mezzanine office flew inward, slamming violently against the drywall.

Anthony Moretti spun around, his hand reaching frantically for a pistol sitting on the desk beside his coffee cup.

Before his fingers could touch the cold steel grip, Gabriel Vain stepped through the doorway, his pistol raised with precise, absolute lethal stillness, the black barrel pointing directly between Anthony Moretti’s eyes.

"Touch that weapon, Anthony," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register that made the glass windows vibrate softly, "and you won't live long enough to see your family's trial tomorrow."

Anthony froze instantly, his fingers hovering three inches above the desk, his face turning an ash-gray shade of terror.

Behind Gabriel, Marco stepped into the room, snatching Anthony's weapon from the desk and shoving the heavy lieutenant backward against the glass wall.

Tessa sprinted past them both, stepping directly in front of the technician’s terminal screen.

"Move!" Tessa shouted at the terrified technician, shoving his chair aside with a surge of strength she didn't know she possessed.

She grabbed the mouse, her eyes scanning the complex medical directory flashing on the screen.

SYSTEM WARNING: FILE REWRITE IN PROGRESS - 84% COMPLETE.

"They're deleting the HLA tissue-typing markers!" Tessa cried, her hands shaking as she pulled up the secondary emergency backup tab she had seen the hospital nurses use a hundred times. "If this finishes, the German team won't have the baseline profile to verify the marrow stability!"

"Can you stop it?" Gabriel asked, keeping his weapon trained on Anthony Moretti, who was standing against the wall with his hands raised.

"Not from this terminal!" Tessa gasped, her tears threatening to blind her as she watched the progress bar hit 89%. "They've locked the administrator override sequence using your brother's trust key!"

Gabriel did not hesitate.

He raised his weapon six inches to the right.

THWACK.

A single suppressed shot rang out in the small room.

The bullet struck the main server housing beneath the desk, shattering the central processing board, sending a shower of bright blue sparks and acrid white smoke pouring into the air.

The four computer monitors went black instantly.

The silence that followed was total, heavy, and absolute.

Tessa dropped her hands from the keyboard, her chest heaving, staring at the smoking metal tower on the floor.

"Is the hospital connection dead?" Gabriel asked her quietly.

Tessa pulled her cheap smartphone from her pocket, her wet fingers tapping the screen frantically as she logged into the patient family portal at St. Jude's.

Three seconds passed.

A green checkmark appeared on her screen.

PATIENT FILE #88492: SAMUEL HARPER.STATUS: CONFIRMED FOR TRANSPLANT PREP.DONOR PACKAGE: DISPATCHED FROM FRANKFURT AIRPORT. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 23:45.

May you like

Tessa let out a long, shuddering sob, covering her face with her hands as she dropped into the office chair.

"It's safe," she wept softly, her voice filled with an overwhelming, beautiful relief. "The file didn't corrupt. Sam's marrow is coming."
