Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Bond

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, purple, and crimson, I sat on the porch of my new home—a cozy, modern beach house overlooking the Atlantic coastline.
The ocean breeze was soft and fresh, carrying the clean scent of saltwater and pine.
Inside, the warm lights of the house glowed through the windows. Oliver was sleeping soundly in his ocean-themed nursery, his tiny chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful rest.
I sat in a wide rocking chair, holding a journal in my lap.
I looked out at the rolling waves, remembering the dark night seven months ago when I was locked in a cold basement study, bleeding, terrified, and forced to choose between my fortune and my child.
They had thought my pain was a weakness. They had thought postpartum depression had stripped away my intellect, my courage, and my identity.
They didn't understand that a mother’s love for her child is not a variable that can be calculated, manipulated, or destroyed by financial greed. It is an absolute force of nature—an unbreakable bond that can shatter iron doors, expose the deepest corruption, and tear down empires.
My phone on the porch table buzzed softly. It was an automated system alert from my forensic network, confirming that the last digital trace of the Ashcroft estate had been officially archived and erased from the state registry.
I picked up the phone, looked at the screen for a moment, and then powered it off completely.
I didn't need diagnostic software anymore. I didn't need hidden microphones or encrypted networks.
I stood up from the rocking chair, stepped inside the warm house, and walked quietly down the hallway toward Oliver’s nursery.
I leaned over his crib, pulling the soft wool blanket gently over his shoulders. I kissed his forehead, smelling his sweet milk scent, and listened to his quiet, rhythmic breathing.

“I’ve got you, Oliver,” I whispered softly into the quiet night. “Nobody will ever come between us again.”
I closed the nursery door gently, leaving it unlocked.
