Chapter 4 - The Law Arrives

The massive glass front doors of the Ashcroft estate were suddenly thrown open with a violent thud.

A squad of six uniformed police officers, flanked by two detectives in dark suits, poured into the foyer. Behind them stood Mara Vance, my former general counsel, holding a thick leather briefcase and flanked by two official representatives from the State Child Protective Services.

“Vivian Ashcroft!” Detective Marcus Vance—Mara’s brother and a senior investigator with the county sheriff’s department—announced, his voice booming through the foyer. “Step away from the mother immediately!”

Vivian froze, her hands hovering in mid-air. She turned toward the police, attempting to instantly switch back to her aristocratic composure.

“Detective! Thank goodness you’re here!” Vivian exclaimed, putting a hand over her heart. “My daughter-in-law has had a severe psychotic break! She attacked my son in the basement, stole her infant child, and hacked our audio system to play defamatory fabrications! She needs to be remanded to a psychiatric facility immediately!”

Detective Vance didn't even look at her. He walked right past Vivian and stepped directly up to me.

“Laura,” Marcus said softly, his eyes taking in the blood on my face and my blood-stained clothes. “Are you and the baby okay?”

“We’re safe now, Marcus,” I said, my voice strong and unwavering. “Oliver is unharmed. Daniel is locked in the basement study downstairs.”

Mara stepped forward, wrapping a warm, soft wool coat around my shoulders and placing a gentle hand on my arm.

“You did incredible, Laura,” Mara whispered, her eyes shining with pride. “We recorded the entire transmission. The police received the live feed five minutes ago.”

Vivian stared at the officers in sheer disbelief. “What are you talking about? I am the chairman of the hospital board! I demand you arrest this woman for child endangerment!”

Detective Vance pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and unfolded it in front of Vivian’s face.

“Vivian Ashcroft, I have a warrant for your arrest for grand larceny, extortion, corporate fraud, physical assault, and the forgery of a judicial document,” Marcus stated coldly.

“Forgery? That’s absurd!” Vivian spat, backing up. “I have a legal court order signed by Judge Margaret Vance!”

“Judge Margaret Vance is my aunt, Vivian,” Mara Vance stepped forward, her voice cutting through the foyer like an iron blade. “And she retired to Florida six weeks ago. I personally called her fifteen minutes ago. She never signed a petition regarding Laura Ashcroft, nor did she issue a custody order. Your draft was generated using an outdated digital template stolen from a court clerk you bribed last year.”

Vivian’s jaw dropped. She looked around frantically, seeking support from her wealthy friends, but every single guest was backing away from her, filming her downfall on their phones.

“Officers, take her into custody,” Detective Vance ordered.

Two uniformed officers stepped forward, grabbing Vivian’s arms and twisting them behind her back.

“Get your hands off me!” Vivian screamed, flailing her legs as the steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. “Do you know who I am? I will have all of your badges! Daniel! Daniel, help me!”

Right on cue, two other officers emerged from the basement hallway, escorting Daniel in handcuffs. His hair was disheveled, his expensive suit rumpled, and his face twisted in a pathetic mix of fury and fear.

As they dragged Daniel past me, he looked at me with pure hatred.

“You destroyed everything, Laura!” Daniel yelled. “You ruined this family!”

I looked at my husband—the man who had watched me cry beside a baby bottle warmer, the man who had helped his mother lock me in a windowless room to steal my life’s work—and I felt absolutely nothing for him.

“You destroyed yourself, Daniel,” I said calmly. “I just brought a microphone.”
