Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Richard slammed his glass onto the table so hard champagne sloshed over the linen cloth.

“Nathan!” Richard roared, looking toward the perimeter guards standing near the doors. “What is the meaning of this?! Get this woman back to her room immediately!”

Nathan Brooks stepped forward from the doorway, but he did not move toward Emma. He stood behind her left shoulder, his hands folded neatly in front of his belt, his face completely devoid of expression.

“Nathan!” Richard shouted, his voice cracking with rage. “Are you deaf?! Remove her!”

“Mr. Brooks answers to me now, Richard,” Emma said softly, pulling out a chair at the foot of the table and sitting down with effortless grace. “In fact... everyone in this house answers to me now.”

Vanessa stood up from her chair, her face flushed with fury, pointing a manicured finger across the table.

“You crazy bitch!” Vanessa spat, abandoning her delicate socialite mask entirely. “You think you can just walk in here looking like that after what you did to me yesterday?! Richard, she belongs in an asylum! Call the police right now!”

Emma turned her dark eyes toward Vanessa, her expression entirely serene.

“Call them, Vanessa,” Emma said quietly. “Please. Use the red landline on the buffet table. Direct line to the Dallas Chief of Police. Go ahead.”

Vanessa sneered, turning toward the phone. But before her hand could touch the receiver, the double doors of the dining room burst open again.

Four men in dark charcoal suits entered the room. They moved with absolute tactical precision, positioning themselves at every exit door, their hands resting over concealed holsters.

Behind them walked Samuel Vance.

The room went dead silent.

Senator Thomas blinked, pulling his reading glasses down over his nose as he stared at the old man walking into the room.

“Samuel...?” Senator Thomas gasped, his voice trembling. “Samuel Vance? The director of the Vance Financial Group?”

Samuel ignored the senator completely. He walked straight down the length of the dining room, stopped behind Emma’s chair, and bowed his head respectfully.

“The perimeter is secure, Ms. Whitmore,” Samuel reported in a voice that carried the weight of absolute authority. “All outside communications from this estate have been severed. The private servers of Hale Enterprises have been isolated and seized under Federal Warrant 8802.”

Richard stood up so fast his chair fell backward, crashing onto the floor.

“What warrant?!” Richard shouted, his face turning a dark, mottled red. “This is a private residence! Who the hell are you people?!”

Samuel pulled a thick, leather-bound folder from his jacket and tossed it onto the center of the dining table, directly between the plates of croissants and chilled fruit.

“Open it, Richard,” Emma instructed softly, taking a slow sip of water from a nearby glass.

Richard hesitated, his fingers trembling as he reached out and flipped open the leather binder.

The first page displayed a stamped federal indictment from the Department of Justice, signed by the Chief Judge of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Below it were sixty pages of bank statements, offshore transfer registries, flight telemetry logs, and wiretap transcripts detailing every transaction executed by Hale Enterprises, Aegis Global Holdings, and Vanessa Cole over the past four years.

“What... what is this?” Richard whimpered, his eyes scanning the lines of black text.

“That,” Emma said, leaning forward on the table, her eyes locking onto Richard’s like two steel hooks, “is the complete record of how you and Vanessa systematically destroyed my father’s company, murdered my parents over Dallas airspace, and stole three hundred million dollars in municipal land assets.”
