Chapter 8 - The Exorcism

At eight-thirty in the morning, three black federal SUVs with dark tinted windows pulled up the long, winding driveway of the Hale estate, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the manicured hedges.

Six federal agents in dark blue jackets stamped with FBI — FINANCIAL CRIMES & HOMICIDE DIVISION stepped out, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance—Samuel’s youngest son.

They walked directly into the grand dining room through the front entrance, which Nathan opened for them.

“Richard Hale,” Agent Vance announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “Vanessa Cole. You are both under federal arrest for capital murder, corporate sabotage, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit treason, and grand larceny.”

Vanessa let out a shriek as two agents grabbed her arms, pulling her away from the French windows. Her emerald ring caught the light one last time before her wrists were clicked securely into cold steel behind her back.

“Richard! Do something!” Vanessa screamed, kicking her legs as she was dragged down the marble corridor. “Call the attorneys! Call the governor!”

Richard didn't move. He sat motionless in his leather chair, staring blankly at the empty champagne glasses, his mind completely broken.

As the agents stepped forward to lift Richard from his seat, Emma held up a single hand.

“Give us two minutes,” Emma said to the agents.

Agent Vance nodded, stepping back to allow her space.

Emma walked up to Richard, looking down at the man she had been married to for three long, agonizing years.

“Why did you do it, Richard?” Emma asked quietly. “My father treated you like a son. He gave your firm its first major development contract when you were thirty years old.”

Richard slowly raised his eyes. The arrogance, the cold entitlement, the cruel vanity that had defined him for years was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, pathetic emptiness.

“He... he looked down on me,” Richard whispered, his voice dry and cracking. “Edward always looked at me like I was small. Like I was just some junior partner who got lucky. I wanted to show him... I wanted to show all of you that I could own everything he built.”

Emma looked at him with a profound, quiet pity.

“You didn't own it, Richard,” Emma said softly. “You just stole it while the owners were sleeping. And now... the lease is expired.”

Agent Vance pulled Richard up by his arms, locking the steel handcuffs around his wrists with two sharp, metallic clicks.

As Richard was led out through the double doors, he looked back over his shoulder one last time.

Emma was standing at the head of the dining table, bathed in the warm, golden sunlight of the Texas morning, surrounded by the men and women of the Vanguard who had served her family for generations.
