Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Sapphire

Three months later.

The icy winter had settled over Lake Forest, blanketing the grounds of the grand estate in soft, pristine white snow. Lake Michigan stretched out before the property, a deep, majestic blue under the pale winter sun.

Inside the mansion’s warm, sunlit conservatory, Lydia stood by the glass windows, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, looking out over the snow-covered garden.

Her life had changed completely. Her mountain of medical debt had been quietly paid off by Vincent’s legal team. She was no longer a waitress struggling to survive on double shifts; she had been given a new purpose, managing the legal charitable foundations Isabella had established years ago, directing millions of dollars toward shelters, medical clinics, and low-income families across Chicago.

Heavy, familiar footsteps sounded behind her on the marble floor.

Vincent walked up behind her, wrapping his warm, strong arms around her waist, resting his chin softly against her shoulder. He smelled of dark cedarwood and expensive tobacco.

"You're thinking again," Vincent murmured softly into her hair.

Lydia leaned back against his broad chest, a warm, peaceful smile spreading across her lips. "I was just thinking about Isabella."

Vincent went quiet for a moment, his gaze drifting out toward the snowy gardens. "What about her?"

"I think she knew," Lydia whispered, turning around in his arms to look up into his dark, handsome face. "I think when she sat dying in that diner two years ago, she didn't just pick a stranger to deliver a ledger. She picked the person who could heal you after she was gone."

Vincent looked down at her with profound, intense affection. He reached up, his long fingers gently picking up the blue sapphire pendant resting against her sweater—the necklace she now wore not as a dangerous secret, but as a symbol of justice and new beginnings.

"She gave me back my life through you, Lydia," Vincent said softly, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss against her lips. "And I will spend the rest of my life protecting yours."
