Chapter 8 - The Golden Key

I placed my hand in his. His grip was warm, firm, and reassuring.
He led me through the quiet, softly lit corridors toward the newly renovated glass conservatory at the rear of the estate—a space that had previously been used for storage, but had been completely rebuilt over the past month.
Ethan opened the grand double doors.
Inside, the conservatory was warm, filled with tropical plants, small orange trees, and comfortable modern study desks equipped with high-end financial computers, monitors, and an extensive library of accounting textbooks. High above, the glass dome showed the night sky and the falling snow.
“What is this?” I gasped, looking around the breathtaking room.
“This is the headquarters of the newly established Bennett Foundation for Financial Relief,” Ethan revealed, turning to face me. “A ten-million-dollar endowment created by Caldwell Enterprises.”
My breath caught in my throat. “The Bennett Foundation?”
“It is a non-profit trust designed specifically to acquire and forgive predatory medical debt for low-income families in Illinois,” Ethan explained, his eyes shining with pride. “And as of January first, you are appointed as its founding Director.”
I stared at him, tears blinding my vision once again. “Ethan... ten million dollars? You built this for my mother’s memory?”
“I built it because the world needs more people like you running things,” Ethan said softly. “People who know what it feels like to suffer, and who have the heart to lift others out of the dark.”
I stepped forward, unable to contain the rush of gratitude and affection pouring through my heart. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face against his shoulder.
Ethan froze for a fraction of a second, surprised by the sudden movement, before his arms wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me close against his chest. He held me with incredible tenderness, his chin resting against my hair, holding me safe against the cold world outside.

“Thank you,” I sobbed softly against his sweater. “Thank you, Ethan.”
“You never have to thank me again, Ivy,” he whispered into my hair. “Never again.”
