Chapter 3 - The Fracture at the Gate

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

I scooped Liam and Noah up into my arms despite the weight, while Ethan grabbed tightly onto the edge of my navy tunic. I scrambled up from the hot asphalt, retreating three paces back toward Richard’s sleek black SUV parked just inside the estate perimeter.

“Richard, darling! What on earth are you doing?!” Victoria’s voice floated down the driveway, high, sweet, and utterly psychotic in its false composure.

She was ten yards away now. As she stepped into the bright sunlight near the gate, the object behind her back swung into full view.

It was a heavy, stainless-steel fireplace poker—a sharp, wrought-iron rod she had grabbed from the grand living room mantelpiece.

Her eyes flicked from Richard to me, and then to the three bleeding boys cowering against my knees. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the elegant Palo Alto socialite slipped entirely, revealing the dark, predatory cruelty beneath it.

“Victoria,” Richard said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, vibrating tone that made even the air around him feel heavy. He took two long strides forward, standing directly in her path. “Drop the iron.”

Victoria stopped. She blinked, forcing a soft, laugh that sounded completely hollow.

“Richard, sweetheart, you don't understand,” she said quickly, stepping forward again, raising her left hand as if to touch his chest. “The boys... they’ve lost their minds! They threw a total tantrum after you fired Emily. They broke a basement window themselves while trying to hide! I went down there to try and help them, but they attacked me! They’re completely out of control, Richard!”

“Liar!” Ethan screamed from behind my legs, his hands shaking as he held onto my tunic. “You locked the door from the outside! You said you were going to lock us in a dark box until we forgot Miss Emily’s name!”

Victoria’s jaw clenched, her eyes darting to Ethan with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

“Shut your mouth, you little brat!” she snapped, forgetting herself for a split second.

“Victoria!” Richard’s roar shattered the quiet neighborhood.

He stepped directly into her personal space, his hand snapping out like a steel trap, grabbing her wrist—the one holding the heavy fireplace poker. He squeezed with enough force to make her drop the iron rod onto the pavement with a loud, metallic CLANG.

“Richard! You’re hurting me!” Victoria shrieked, struggling against his grip, her composure completely dissolving into ugly panic.

“Did you lock my sons in the cellar?” Richard asked. His voice was low, flat, and devoid of any human warmth. His steel-grey eyes bored into her face, searching every line, every twitch of her skin.

“No! Of course not!” Victoria lied, tears springing to her eyes—fake, practiced tears that I had seen her use dozens of times to manipulate people. “I love those boys, Richard! I’ve done everything for them! Why would you listen to a thieving housekeeper and three hysterical children over your own fiancée?!”

“Because my sons are bleeding,” Richard whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. “And because Liam has never lied to me in his entire life.”

Richard released her wrist with a force that sent her stumbling back two paces onto the grass shoulder.

He pulled his phone from his pocket, his fingers moving rapidly across the glass screen. He didn't call his corporate lawyer. He didn't call his public relations manager.

He pressed three numbers.

“911, what is your emergency?” the speaker crackled.

“My name is Richard Hawthorne,” he said clearly, staring straight into Victoria’s terrified eyes. “I am at 1400 Blackwood Estates Drive. I need an ambulance for three injured five-year-olds immediately, and I need police officers to arrest a woman for child endangerment, unlawful restraint, and assault.”

“Richard, no! Are you insane?!” Victoria screamed, stepping toward him, her hands clawing at his suit lapels. “Think about my family! Think about the press! You can't do this to me over a stupid misunderstanding!”

Richard shoved her hands away as if she were covered in sewage.

“Get off my property,” Richard said, his tone as final as a death sentence. “If you step one foot closer to my children before the police arrive, I promise you, Victoria... I will make sure you spend the next ten years in a federal prison cell.”

Victoria stood on the manicured grass, her expensive blonde hair falling wildly over her face, her chest heaving as she realized her life, her social standing, and her multi-million-dollar future had just turned to ash.

Richard turned his back on her completely. He walked over to where I stood with the boys, dropping back onto his knees on the pavement.

His hands were trembling as he looked up at me.

“Emily...” Richard choked out, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Please... bring them inside. Help me save my boys.”
