Chapter 5 - The Interrogation

The next three hours passed in a chaotic blur of blue uniforms, flashing lights, medical personnel, and high-stakes legal drama.

Two paramedics carefully checked the boys over in the living room, wrapping Liam’s arm in proper medical bandages and treating Noah and Ethan for minor cuts and shock. The boys refused to let me leave the room; every time an officer stepped too close, Noah would grab my hand, pulling me closer to his side.

In the grand study, three Palo Alto police detectives were interviewing Victoria Lane, who had been brought back to the house in handcuffs after trying to board a rideshare vehicle at the estate gates.

Her prominent father, Charles Lane—a billionaire real estate developer—had already arrived at the estate with a team of four criminal defense attorneys in tow.

The shouting from the study echoed down the marble hallway.

“This is an absolute farce!” Charles Lane’s voice boomed through the mahogany doors. “My daughter is a respected member of the community! You cannot detain her on the wild fabrications of three five-year-old children and an disgruntled, low-class maid!”

I sat on the velvet sofa in the living room, holding Ethan on my lap, quietly reading him a picture book to keep his mind off the noise outside.

Suddenly, the study doors flew open.

Richard Hawthorne walked out, flanked by his personal chief legal officer, Mark Vance. Richard looked entirely different now. The panic and guilt had crystallized into a cold, ruthless fury that made even the police officers step out of his way.

Charles Lane stormed out behind him, his face purple with anger.

“Richard! Listen to reason!” Charles bellowed, waving a hand toward his daughter, who sat crying hysterically in the custody of two female officers. “If this gets out to the press, both our corporate stocks will plunge twenty percent by tomorrow morning! We can settle this quietly! Send the boys to a private clinic, give the housekeeper a generous settlement to sign a non-disclosure agreement, and drop the charges!”

Richard stopped in the middle of the hallway. He turned around slowly, looking at Charles Lane as if he were an annoying insect.

“A non-disclosure agreement?” Richard asked, his voice deceptively smooth.

“Yes!” Charles urged, thinking he was making headway. “We cover her silence, we put Victoria in a private wellness facility for a few weeks to deal with 'stress,' and we tell the public the wedding is postponed! It protects everyone, Richard!”

Richard walked up to Charles until they were standing nose-to-nose.

“Your daughter locked my motherless five-year-old sons in a pitch-black boiler basement,” Richard said, every single word laced with venom. “She framed an innocent woman who has given her life to care for my family. And then she walked down my driveway carrying a steel fireplace poker with the intent to harm my children.”

“She was panicked!” Charles argued desperately.

“I don't care if she was possessed,” Richard snapped. “I am pressing every single charge available under state and federal law. Child abuse, felony false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, and filing a false police report.”

“I will destroy your corporate merger, Richard!” Charles threatened, his voice cracking. “I will pull every investor out of Hawthorne Holdings!”

“Pull them,” Richard replied coldly. “I will spend every single dollar in my bank accounts to ensure your daughter spends the next decade behind bars. Now get the hell out of my house before I have my security team physically throw you onto the street.”

The chief detective stepped forward, placing a hand on Victoria’s shoulder. “Victoria Lane, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent...”

As the officers led a wailing, hysterically screaming Victoria past the living room, she locked eyes with me one last time. The bitter, poisonous hatred in her glare was terrifying, but I didn't look away. I squeezed Ethan closer to my chest, holding her gaze until she was pushed through the double front doors and into the back of a police cruiser.

The house went quiet once more.

The paramedics finished their reports and left. The police vehicles pulled away down the driveway, their flashing lights vanishing into the dusk.

Richard stood alone in the grand foyer, surrounded by discarded medical wrappers, empty water bottles, and the deafening, hollow silence of his massive home.

He slowly walked into the living room, stopping near the edge of the sofa where I sat with his three sons.

All three boys were fast asleep now, completely exhausted from terror and crying, their small bodies piled around me on the cushions.

Richard looked down at them, then dropped to his knees on the rug at my feet.

He looked up at me, his eyes rimmed with red, tears finally spilling freely down his face.

“Emily...” Richard whispered, his voice completely broken. “I don't even know how to ask for your forgiveness.”
