Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in the Tower

Friday morning arrived with an icy, brilliant blue sky over Boston.
The forty-second floor boardroom of Knight Development Group was filled to capacity. Twelve principal shareholders sat around the massive oval glass table, whispering nervously among themselves.
Arthur Vance sat at the head of the table, his fingers tapping frantically against his leather folder.
At precisely 9:00 AM, the heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Matthew Knight rolled into the room.
He did not come alone. Beside him stood Peter Walsh, carrying two thick leather boxes of documents, and Natalie Zeller, looking stunning in a tailored navy suit.
Matthew drove his chair directly to the head of the table, stopping opposite Arthur Vance.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Matthew said, his tone icy and sharp. "Let’s begin."
Arthur stood up, clearing his throat loudly, trying desperately to project authority. "Matthew, while we are all pleased to see you out of the house, this meeting was officially convened under Clause 14 to address the physical and administrative leadership of this company—"
"Clause 14 is irrelevant, Arthur," Matthew interrupted flatly.
He motioned to Peter, who opened the leather boxes, sliding thick financial dockets in front of every shareholder at the table.
"Over the last seventy-two hours," Matthew explained, resting his hands on his lap, "my audit team conducted a full forensic analysis of the secondary offshore accounts managed by Arthur Vance over the past eighteen months."
Arthur’s face turned gray. "What? That's... that's an invasion of privacy!"
"It's corporate fraud, Arthur," Matthew said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "You embezzled fourteen million dollars from our European development fund, routing it through shell corporations in the Cayman Islands to buy options against Knight Development stock—options that would have paid out sixty million dollars the moment you voted me out and collapsed our stock value."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Shareholders gasped, frantically flipping through the bank statements and wire receipts in the dockets before them.
Arthur fell back into his leather chair, trembling uncontrollably. "Matthew... please... we can talk about this..."
"There is nothing to talk about, Arthur," Matthew said.
Two uniformed federal agents stepped into the boardroom from the hallway.
"Arthur Vance," the lead agent announced, walking up to Arthur’s chair. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities manipulation. Stand up and put your hands behind your back."
As the agents handcuffed Arthur and led him out of the room in disgrace, the twelve shareholders sat in stunned, terrified silence.
Matthew looked around the glass table at the men who had been ready to betray him forty-eight hours ago.
"Does anyone else wish to invoke Clause 14?" Matthew asked softly.
May you like
Not a single man moved. Not a single man spoke.
"Good," Matthew said, taking a red pen from his jacket pocket and signing the affordable housing contract lying on the table. "Now let's get back to work."
