Chapter 8 - The Miracle in the Garden

Two months later.

Spring had come to Boston, melting the ice along the Charles River and turning the Public Garden into a paradise of tulips, cherry blossoms, and green grass.

In a private neurological rehabilitation facility in Brookline, Matthew sat in a specialized therapy room surrounded by three top orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists.

Natalie stood by the wall, holding her breath, her hands clasped tightly against her chest.

Matthew was strapped into an advanced robotic exoskeleton—a revolutionary neurological device designed to send electrical impulses directly into severed spinal pathways.

"Alright, Mr. Knight," Dr. Chen, the lead neurologist, said, checking the monitors. "The neural bridges are active. Whenever you're ready, try to initiate a forward step."

Matthew closed his eyes.

For three years, his brain had sent signals to his legs that vanished into a dark, silent void. The fear of failure had kept him from trying again. The agony of disappointment had made him retreat into his wheelchair.

He opened his eyes and looked across the room at Natalie.

She gave him a small, radiant nod. I believe in you, her eyes said.

Matthew gritted his teeth. He focused every ounce of his legendary will, every shred of his intellect, and every drop of love burning in his soul onto his right leg.

A sudden, sharp jolt of electricity shot down his thigh.

His right foot lifted off the black rubber floor.

It moved forward six inches.

It planted firmly on the ground.

Natalie gasped, covering her mouth with both hands, tears pouring down her face.

Matthew panted heavily, sweat dripping down his forehead, his body shaking from the massive physical exertion. He looked down at his right foot. It had moved.

"Neural response verified!" Dr. Chen shouted, his face lit up with professional triumph. "Mr. Knight... the nerve pathways aren't destroyed! They were dormant!"

Matthew raised his head, looking at Natalie through his own tears.

He didn't care about the medical miracle. He didn't care about the technology. He knew why his body was waking up.

For three years, he had been dead inside. Natalie had breathed life back into his soul, and now, his body was following her lead.

"Again," Matthew growled through his teeth, his jaw locked with fierce determination. "Let's do it again."

He took another step.
