Chapter 6 - The Fall of Stratford Dynamics

Marcus stood up slowly, surrounded by his team of lawyers like a disgraced general hiding behind his remaining lieutenants. He walked to the podium in front of the judge’s bench.

“Your Honor,” Marcus’s lead attorney, a man named Henderson who charged twelve hundred dollars an hour, stepped forward smoothly. “My client is not currently facing formal arraignment in this courtroom today. We are here merely as observers—”

“You are here, Mr. Henderson,” Judge Pendleton interrupted sharply, “because I issued a mandatory show-cause summons to your client six hours ago regarding his attempt to coerce a witness outside my presence.”

Pendleton leaned forward over his high oak desk, resting his chin on his steepled fingers.

“Mr. Stratford, while the District Attorney and the Federal Securities and Exchange Commission assemble their formal criminal indictments against you for grand larceny, wire fraud, and pension embezzlement, this court has a more immediate concern.”

Pendleton gestured toward the front row. “Mrs. Linda Stratford’s legal counsel has filed an emergency motion for injunctive relief and corporate restructuring. Given that you have utilized corporate funds to perpetrate domestic abuse and financial fraud, I am issuing an immediate temporary injunction.”

Marcus’s lead lawyer flushed. “Your Honor! This is an unprecedented overreach for a municipal judge!”

“I am sitting as a designated Special Magistrate for the State Chancery Court today, Mr. Henderson,” Pendleton replied, holding up a certified blue document. “The Chief Justice signed the jurisdictional transfer at 7:30 this morning. Read the header.”

Henderson looked at the document, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. He swallowed hard and stepped back.

“Effective immediately,” Pendleton declared, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom, “Marcus Stratford’s voting rights as Chief Executive Officer of Stratford Dynamics are suspended. The board of directors is ordered to convene an emergency session at 2:00 PM today.”

Pendleton looked down at Linda.

“Furthermore, the court appoints Mrs. Linda Stratford as Court Receiver and Interim Operating Trustee of Stratford Dynamics, with full authority to freeze illicit accounts, terminate compromised personnel, and cooperate directly with federal law enforcement.”

Marcus took a wild step forward, pushing past his attorney. “You can’t do this! That company is mine! I built it! She’s just a bitter ex-wife who wants to ruin me!”

“That company was built on your father-in-law’s capital and your wife’s intellect, Mr. Stratford,” Pendleton snapped, his voice ringing like iron hitting steel. “You were merely the caretaker who decided to rob the vault. You are dismissed.”

Marcus stood frozen as the realization washed over him.

He was no longer the CEO. He had no access to his money. His mistress was in jail. His house was under federal seal. His legal team was already looking at him like a man who couldn't pay their retainer.

In thirty-six hours, he had fallen from the absolute peak of the city’s elite to a ruined, bankrupt criminal waiting for a federal indictment.

Linda stood up from her seat. She didn't look at Marcus as he was ushered out of the courtroom by his nervous attorneys. She didn't gloat. She simply adjusted her blazer, picked up her portfolio, and walked down the center aisle.

As she passed Judge Pendleton’s bench, the old judge looked down at her over his glasses.

“Mrs. Stratford,” Pendleton said softly, dropping the formal courtroom tone.

Linda stopped and turned. “Yes, Your Honor?”

“The storm is over,” the old man said, a gentle, genuine smile touching his eyes. “Now go fix your company.”

“Thank you, Judge Pendleton,” Linda said softly. “For everything.”
