Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

The lobby of Stratford Dynamics Tower was an ocean of blinding camera flashes, boom microphones, and shouting reporters. Over thirty news networks were broadcasting live.
At 2:30 PM sharp, Linda stepped out of the private executive elevator and walked up to the podium bearing the company’s golden crest.
She looked radiant. The red mark on her cheek had faded, replaced by a warm, commanding glow of absolute confidence.
Beside the podium stood District Attorney Vance and Chief Judge Arthur Pendleton, who had joined the event to confirm the legal legitimacy of the corporate transition.
Linda raised her hands, and the chaotic shouting of eighty journalists died down to absolute silence.
“Good afternoon,” Linda spoke into the cluster of microphones. “My name is Linda Stratford. As of 2:00 PM today, I have resumed my role as Chief Executive Officer of Stratford Dynamics.”
A wave of camera flashes exploded across the lobby.
“Over the last forty-eight hours,” Linda continued smoothly, “this organization has faced a severe breach of trust perpetuated by its former executive leadership. I want to state unequivocally to our employees, our shareholders, and our global partners: the corruption was isolated to one man.”
She paused, looking directly into the primary camera lens of the city’s largest network.
“Marcus Stratford attempted to dismantle this firm for personal greed. He failed. The stolen capital has been secured. Our pension funds are one hundred percent intact. And as founder of the operational core of this business, I am personally guaranteeing that every contract, every project, and every obligation will be fulfilled on schedule.”
A reporter in the front row shouted out, “Mrs. Stratford! What about the charges against your husband and his associate, Jessica Miller?”
Linda looked at the reporter, her expression turning cool and professional.
“Mr. Stratford is currently facing extensive federal and state indictments for fraud, embezzlement, and obstruction of justice. Miss Miller is remanded in state custody facing felony assault charges. The legal system will handle those individuals appropriately. As for Stratford Dynamics... we are moving forward.”
District Attorney Vance stepped up to the microphone beside her.
“I would like to add,” Vance announced loudly, “that Mrs. Stratford’s courage, brilliant financial foresight, and complete cooperation with law enforcement have saved over four thousand jobs in this city today. The DA’s office will be filing full restitution motions to ensure she and the firm are made whole.”
The reporters broke into unexpected applause.
As Linda stepped back from the podium, Judge Pendleton walked up beside her, leaning on his wooden cane.
“You handled that with tremendous grace, my dear,” Pendleton whispered, watching the reporters scramble to file their breaking news stories.
“I had a very good teacher in Courtroom 4B this morning,” Linda smiled gently.
“Nonsense,” Pendleton chuckled. “You were born for the helm. Now, if you’ll excuse an old man, I believe my coffee at the Gilded Bean is long overdue.”

“Allow me to buy you lunch tomorrow, Your Honor,” Linda said warmly. “At a table far away from the front window.”
Pendleton’s dark eyes twinkled with genuine warmth. “I would be honored, Chief Executive Stratford. I would be honored.”
