Chapter 5 - The Preparations

Friday passed in a blur of deliberate, methodical preparation.

While Graham spent the day at his corporate office, frantically making phone calls to ensure the gala was fully staffed, I was quietly dismantling his safety net.

I visited our primary bank branch downtown. Armed with the original trust documents my father had set up—documents that explicitly named me as the primary guarantor of our joint accounts—I executed a legal severance. I transferred every penny of our personal savings, amounting to one point two million dollars, into a newly created, protected trust account under Lily’s name.

Next, I met with Dr. Aris, Lily’s pediatrician. I secured a comprehensive medical record detailing her treatment history, including every night I had spent at the clinic alone while Graham was marked as "absent." Dr. Aris signed an affidavit confirming that Graham had not attended a single medical appointment for his daughter in over two years.

By Friday evening, Graham returned home briefly to change into his preliminary tux for a pre-event dinner with the foundation’s major benefactors.

He walked past me in the upstairs hallway, smelling heavily of expensive cologne and cigar smoke. He stopped briefly, looking at the small suitcase sitting near my bedroom door.

"What's that?" he asked, pointing his finger toward the bag.

"I'm taking Lily to my mother's estate in the country tomorrow morning," I said casually, adjusting my sweater. "Her ear is still bothering her, and the city air isn't helping."

Graham’s face instantly relaxed. A subtle, almost imperceptible look of relief washed over his features.

"That's... actually a very sensible idea, Catherine," he said, trying to conceal the excitement in his voice. "The gala is going to be incredibly loud and stressful anyway. It’s probably best if you and Lily stay away from the chaos tonight. I can represent the family at the main dais."

He was thrilled. He genuinely believed his luck was holding out. He thought I was removing myself from the equation voluntarily, leaving the stage completely open for him and Bianca to celebrate their night at the Plaza without any awkward spousal presence.

"Are you sure you don't mind being alone tonight, Graham?" I asked, looking him straight in the eye.

"Not at all, my dear," he said smoothly, leaning down to give me a hasty, disingenuous kiss on the cheek. "I’ll manage somehow. Just focus on taking care of our daughter."

"I will," I whispered as he turned and walked down the stairs. "I’ll focus entirely on taking care of what's mine."
