Chapter 9 - The Final Keynote

Downstairs in the Grand Ballroom, seven hundred guests sat at round, candlelit tables, drinking champagne and waiting for the evening’s main address.
At precisely eight o'clock, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the gold podium on the main stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer’s voice boomed over the high-fidelity sound system. "Please direct your attention to the main stage for the keynote address by the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Hart Foundation!"
The crowd broke into enthusiastic applause.
The heavy velvet curtains at the side of the stage parted.
But Graham didn't walk out.
Instead, I stepped out into the bright beam of the spotlight, wearing my emerald-green velvet dress, holding a simple leather folder in my hands.
The applause flickered and slowed as people realized it was not Graham standing at the podium. Whispers rippled across the room as prominent board members leaned in to talk to their spouses.
I adjusted the microphone, looking out over the sea of wealthy, influential faces.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice echoing clear and strong through the vast ballroom. "I am Catherine Sterling-Hart, President of the Board of Trustees."
A quiet hush fell over the room.
"Tonight was intended to be a celebration of leadership," I continued, holding my head high. "However, true leadership requires accountability, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to the truth."
I opened the leather folder on the podium.
"As of seven-thirty-five this evening, Mr. Graham Hart has officially tendered his complete and permanent resignation from the Hart Foundation, effective immediately."
Gasps erupted from the front tables. Two news cameras in the central aisle zoomed in on my face.
"Furthermore," I stated cleanly, "following an internal forensic audit conducted over the last forty-eight hours, the Foundation has successfully recovered over four million dollars in misallocated corporate funds. These assets have been permanently secured into a restricted medical endowment that will directly fund pediatric surgical care for low-income families across this state."
The room was completely stunned. Board members sat with open mouths, unable to process the swiftness of the announcement.
"The Hart Foundation was built on my father's belief that those who possess power have a sacred duty to protect the vulnerable," I said, looking directly into the primary news camera lens. "Starting tonight, we return to that mission. Thank you, and enjoy your evening."

I closed the folder, stepped away from the podium, and walked off the stage.
As I reached the side wings, a single pair of hands began to clap from the front table—a senior state judge who had been a close friend of my father. Then another joined in. Within ten seconds, the entire ballroom erupted into a standing ovation that shook the crystal chandeliers overhead.
