Chapter 7 - AFTERMATH OF THE BALL

The drive back to the estate in the back of the armored limousine was quiet, but it was a comfortable, electric silence.

Carmela had fallen asleep against the soft leather seat, exhausted from the evening's emotional highs.

Skylar sat across from Dominic, looking out the tinted window at the passing streetlights. Her heart was still beating furiously in her chest.

"You're quiet," Dominic said softly from the darkness of the cabin.

Skylar turned to look at him. "I'm... I'm just trying to process everything, Mr. Rossi. Tonight was... insane."

"Dominic," he corrected gently.

Skylar blinked. "What?"

"My name is Dominic. You don't need to call me Mr. Rossi anymore, Skylar."

Skylar swallowed hard, testing the name on her tongue. "Dominic... did you really mean what you said back there? About... prospective lady of the estate? Or was that just to put Salvatore in his place?"

Dominic leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, bringing his face closer to hers in the dim light of the car.

"I don't play political games with my family's honor, Skylar," Dominic said, his dark eyes intense and mesmerizing. "When I saw you on the floor three nights ago, bleeding because you protected my mother, something shifted inside me. I spent months blinded by business and obligations, missing what was right in front of me."

"I'm just a maid, Dominic," Skylar whispered, looking down at her hands. "I'm clumsy. I don't know how to navigate your world. People will laugh at you."

"Let them try," Dominic said, his voice laced with iron. "In my world, people are fake. They wear masks. Bianca proved that. You are the only real thing that has entered my life in a very long time. You gave my mother back her dignity. You gave this house a heart."

He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the smooth curve of her jawline, staying just clear of her healing cheek.

"Don't ever downgrade your worth, Skylar," he whispered.

Skylar leaned slightly into his warm touch, a sweet heat blossoming in her chest. For the first time in her life, she felt truly seen—not as a punchline, not as a burden, but as a woman worthy of love and respect.

When they arrived back at the estate, the mood among the domestic staff had completely transformed.

As Mr. Vance opened the front doors, the entire household staff stood lined up in the grand foyer. But there were no sneers, no smirked nicknames, no hidden giggles.

Mr. Vance bowed deeply to Skylar. "Welcome home, Miss Skylar. We have prepared warm tea and night-services in your suite."

Chloe, the young maid who had previously hidden Skylar's cleaning supplies, stepped forward timidly, holding a small tray with a ice pack and clean bandage.

"Miss Skylar..." Chloe said nervously, keeping her eyes lowered. "I... I prepared fresh ice for your cheek. And I wanted to apologize... for how I treated you before. I was ignorant."

Skylar looked at Chloe, then at the rest of the staff. She felt no desire for revenge or spite.

"Thank you, Chloe," Skylar said kindly, taking the tray. "I appreciate it. Goodnight, everyone."

The staff smiled in relief, bowing as Skylar, Carmela, and Dominic walked up the grand staircase together.

The clumsy maid everyone laughed at was gone. In her place stood a woman who commanded the respect of the most feared household in the state.
