Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of Treason

The security hub of the Dantis estate was a windowless, soundproof bunker built deep into the bedrock beneath the main mansion.
Inside, walls lined with thirty-two high-definition monitors illuminated the dark room with a cool, bluish glow. Every square inch of the forty-acre Westchester compound—from the perimeter fences and iron gates to the grand corridors and kitchen pantries—was displayed in real-time feeds.
Adrian Cole sat in a high-backed leather chair, a half-empty glass of scotch resting on the control desk beside a open diagnostic tablet. He was thirty-eight, built broad across the shoulders, with a tight crew cut and a thin, precise mustache that gave him the look of a retired military officer.
When the heavy steel door of the hub clicked open, Adrian didn't even look up from his screen.
"I told you I don't want anyone in here until I fix this drive error, Frank," Adrian said casually, his fingers tapping against the keyboard. "The secondary bus on the Marlowe vehicle had a voltage spike. Some idiot tried to run an unauthorized scan—"
"The idiot was Norah Bennett," Luca’s voice rang out from the doorway.
Adrian’s fingers froze over the keys.
Slowly, he turned the leather chair around.
Luca stood in the doorway, framed by the bright light of the corridor. He had removed his black overcoat, standing now in his dark gray three-piece suit. His hands were tucked casually into his trouser pockets, but his eyes were fixed on Adrian with a terrifying, predatory calm. Behind him stood four senior soldiers—men who took orders from no one except the head of the family.
"Luca," Adrian said, adjusting his posture, slipping smoothly into his professional persona. "You're back early. I thought you were in Hammond dealing with the warehouse situation."
"The warehouse situation was a distraction," Luca said, walking slowly into the room. He didn't look at the monitors; he looked at Adrian's hands. "A fire in an empty facility to pull my attention away from Chicago for twelve hours. Very clever. Very neat."
Adrian chuckled, though the sound was slightly strained. "Well, you know how the Moretti family operates. They like to make noise."
"The Morettis didn't set that fire, Adrian," Luca said softly, stopping three feet from the main console. He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out the small SD memory card he had taken from Norah, and tossed it onto the glass desk between them.
The plastic card bounced once and came to a stop right beside Adrian’s glass of scotch.
Adrian stared at the card. The color slowly drained from his face, leaving his tan skin looking gray and sallow under the blue light of the monitors.
"What is that?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a lower, tighter register.
"That is a secondary audio log from the telematics unit of Celeste’s vehicle," Luca said. "Recorded at 11:14 PM on the night my brother Anthony was ambushed on Route 41."
Silence descended on the room, so absolute that the hum of the server racks sounded like roaring thunder.
Adrian’s hand moved subtly toward the edge of the desk—toward the concealed holstered sidearm mounted beneath the rim of the console.
"I wouldn't," Luca warned quietly.
Before Adrian could complete the thought, the two soldiers behind Luca stepped forward, their silenced pistols drawn and leveled directly at Adrian’s forehead.
"Luca, listen to me," Adrian breathed, his hands slowly rising into the air, palms outward. "Whatever is on that card... it's been tampered with. The maid was messing with the wiring. She’s trying to set me up because I caught her stealing—"
"Norah Bennett’s father ran Bennett Auto Diagnostics for twenty-seven years," Luca interrupted, his tone ice-cold. "She knows how to pull raw binary data from an encrypted secondary storage unit without corrupting the cryptographic hash. The timestamps match the vehicle’s GPS logs. The audio frequency matches your voice and Celeste’s voice."
Luca leaned down, placing both hands flat on the desk, bringing his face inches from Adrian’s.
"You sat at my dinner table," Luca whispered. "You drank my wine. You took my money to protect my family. And then you gave the route schedule for my twenty-one-year-old brother to a death squad."
"It was Marlowe!" Adrian blurted out, panic finally breaking through his hard exterior. "Old man Marlowe set it up! He offered me two million dollars and a thirty-percent stake in the logistics network once Celeste took over the proxy! They were going to squeeze you out anyway, Luca! I just took the boat that was sailing!"
Luca stood up straight. He showed no surprise, no rage, no melodrama. He simply looked at the man who had betrayed him with total, absolute dismissal.
"You didn't take a boat, Adrian," Luca said quietly. "You walked onto a plank."
He turned his back on Adrian and walked toward the door.
"Luca! Wait! Luca, I can give you Marlowe! I have the offshore account numbers! I have the access codes for their private server!" Adrian screamed, thrashing against the two guards who instantly seized his arms, forcing him down onto the concrete floor.
Luca stopped in the doorway, looking back over his shoulder.
"Marco," Luca said to the senior soldier holding Adrian’s left wrist.
May you like
"Yes, Boss?"
"Take him to the basement storage beneath the east boathouse," Luca ordered flatly. "Keep him alive until I speak with my brother. And call Celeste Marlowe. Tell her that I have reviewed the security feeds regarding her missing bracelet, and I would like her to join me for a late breakfast tomorrow morning."
