Chapter 9 - The Garden in Spring

Four months later.
May arrived in Chicago with brilliant blue skies, warm sunshine, and blooming pink cherry blossoms that covered the manicured lawns of the Dantis estate in a blanket of soft petals.
The heavy iron gates of the compound were open.
Parked along the winding driveway were thirty customized vehicles—armored SUVs, classic muscle cars, and sleek European sedans—all bearing the small, elegant brass emblem of Bennett Automotive & Diagnostics on their rear fenders.
Near the central fountain, a large white marquee tent had been erected on the grass, draped in white silk, filled with round tables, fine crystal, and fresh spring flowers.
Over two hundred guests filled the garden—captains of industry, union leaders, mechanics from the South Side, city officials, and the entire Dantis household staff.
In the private dressing room on the second floor of the main house, Norah stood before a full-length mirror.
She wore an exquisite, ivory silk gown with a soft sweetheart neckline, delicate lace sleeves, and a long, sweeping train that caught the afternoon sunlight. Her dark hair was styled up in an elegant, soft braided crown, pinned with small pearl clips.
She looked breathtaking—a far cry from the woman who had sat weeping in a cold garage in a stained cotton uniform six months ago.
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and Anthony stepped inside, wearing a crisp dark tux.
"You look incredible, Norah," Anthony said softly, a warm, genuine smile lighting up his face. His right hand was still stiff, but his tremor had decreased significantly over months of physical therapy.
"Thank you, Anthony," Norah said, turning around, her heart giving a nervous flutter against her ribs. "How is he?"
Anthony chuckled. "Luca has paced back and forth across the chapel altar three times. Frank had to give him a glass of scotch to calm his nerves. I’ve never seen my brother terrified of anything in my life... until today."
Norah smiled, a tender warmth blooming in her chest.
Anthony walked over, offering his left arm to her. "Ready?"
"Ready," Norah said, slipping her arm through his.
They walked together down the grand marble staircase, out through the tall glass doors, and into the sunlit garden.
As the string quartet began to play the opening notes of the bridal march, the entire crowd stood up.
At the end of the white carpet, standing before a floral archway near the fountain, stood Luca Dantis.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, his dark hair brushed back, looking tall, powerful, and impeccably handsome. But as his dark eyes caught sight of Norah walking down the aisle toward him, his posture softened completely. A single, quiet tear escaped his eye, tracking down his cheek before he could wipe it away.
Norah reached the altar, stepping beside him.
Luca reached out, taking her hands in his—his massive, strong hands holding hers with that same fierce, protective gentleness she had come to love.
"You are the most beautiful sight I have ever seen," Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"You're not so bad yourself, Boss," Norah whispered back, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face.
The priest stepped forward, opening his book.
"Dearly beloved," the priest began, his voice echoing warmly through the sunlit garden, "we are gathered here today to unite Luca Dantis and Norah Bennett in holy matrimony..."
As the vows were spoken, as the rings were exchanged—simple, elegant bands of polished platinum—Luca looked into Norah’s eyes, seeing not just his wife, but his savior, his partner, and the anchor of his soul.
"I give you this ring," Luca declared, his voice firm and clear for everyone in the garden to hear, "as a promise that under my roof, you will never be invisible. You will never be alone. And you will always be loved."
"I accept this ring," Norah replied, her voice ringing clear in the spring air, "as a promise that wherever you go, I will stand beside you... not in your shadow, but at your side."
May you like
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared. "You may kiss the bride."
Luca leaned down, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and kissed her—a deep, passionate kiss that sealed two worlds into one, as the entire garden erupted into joyous, thunderous applause that echoed across the Westchester hills.
