Chapter 5 - THE SIX-WEEK MASQUERADE

For the next four weeks, the Vale estate became the stage for a deadly, silent theatrical performance.

To the world, nothing had changed. Adrian Vale was still the deaf, silent crime boss of Oyster Bay. He still communicated through hand gestures, whiteboards, and Gabriel’s silent translations. He still attended his weekly syndicate meetings in Manhattan, sitting in total silence while his lieutenants bickered over union dues and shipping lanes.

But now, Adrian was listening.

And what he heard disgusted him.

Sitting at the head of the conference table in his private penthouse in Midtown, Adrian sat with his hands folded, pretending to read lips while his ears absorbed every whispered betrayal, every quiet insult, and every secret plot hatched by his captains. He learned that three of his top lieutenants—Frankie "The Bull" Vallone, Jimmy "Pines" DeLuca, and Matty Red—were secretly negotiating with the Moretti crime family to split up the Vale shipping docks the moment Adrian married Celeste.

And Celeste was the anchor holding their plot together.

Every evening, Adrian returned to Oyster Bay. He allowed Celeste to sit on his lap, to stroke his hair, and to whisper honeyed lies directly into his deaf ear—unaware that he heard every single word.

"You look so tired tonight, my love," she would whisper softly, her voice dripping with artificial tenderness while her face maintained a sweet smile. "Don't worry about the business. Soon we'll be married, and I'll handle all the tedious paperwork for you. You can just rest in the dark..."

Adrian would nod, giving her a quiet, tragic smile, while inside, his soul burned with icy fury.

Meanwhile, Mara Ellison remained hidden in the estate. She did not stay in the guest room as a prisoner; she lived in the hidden security suite above the garage, equipped with high-powered surveillance monitors that tapped into every camera and hidden microphone Gabriel had installed throughout the mansion.

Late at night, when Celeste was asleep in the west wing, Adrian would slip away to the garage suite.

There, in the quiet glow of the monitors, Adrian and Mara worked together.

"She placed two calls today," Mara told him one evening, pointing to an audio waveform on the screen. She wore a simple black sweater, her hair pulled back, looking more like the brilliant medical resident she once was than the broken woman who had scaled his fence. "One to Frankie Vallone, and one to an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands. She's moving five million dollars from your legitimate real estate accounts into a dummy shell company named Bellini Holdings."

Adrian sat beside her, listening to the recorded audio playback of Celeste’s voice. Hearing his fiancée's cold, calculating tones discussing the liquidation of his brother’s estate sent a fresh wave of disgust through him.

"She named the shell company after the restaurant where Thomas died," Adrian said quietly, his voice now crisp and smooth as he regained full control of his vocal cords.

Mara turned her head, looking at him with deep empathy. "She's sadistic, Adrian. She wants to erase everything your family built."

Adrian looked at Mara’s face. In the four weeks they had spent together in the shadows of the estate, a deep, unspoken bond had formed between them. She was the only person in the world who knew his secret. She was his ears, his strategist, and his salvation.

He reached out, his long fingers gently touching her hand on the desk.

"When this is over, Mara," Adrian said softly, "you will have your medical license back. I will buy St. Jude’s Hospital if I have to. The world will know what they did to you."

May you like

Mara looked down at their joined hands, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in six years. "I don't care about the license anymore, Adrian. I just want justice. For me, and for Thomas."

"You will have it," Adrian vowed. "In two weeks, at the altar."
