Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

By dawn, the rain had ceased completely, leaving the sky over the Calder estate a clear, brilliant shade of indigo.

The Moretti attack had been completely repraved. Victor Vance’s betrayal was exposed, the hit squad was captured or neutralized, and old man Moretti himself had been arrested at the border three hours later following an anonymous tip containing encrypted financial records provided by Julian Vane. The war was over before it could consume the city.

In the courtyard, teams of workers were already removing the damaged vehicles, sweeping away the broken glass, and repairing the iron gates.

Inside the main house, the fire in the great hall burned brightly, casting a warm golden light across the oak paneling.

Roman sat on the large leather sofa near the hearth. He had changed into a clean white shirt and dark trousers, his dark hair still damp from a shower. Sitting right beside him, fast asleep with his head resting on Roman’s knee, was Owen. The boy was wrapped in his blue star blanket, still holding his brass compass tightly in his small fist.

Clare walked down the grand staircase, carrying two fresh mugs of coffee. She had washed her face, tied her auburn hair back into a loose tail, and wore a soft cream wool sweater that made her look peaceful and completely at home.

She walked over to the sofa, handed Roman a mug, and sat down beside him, looking down at her sleeping son.

"He wouldn't go to sleep in his bedroom," Clare said softly. "He insisted that he had to guard you."

A genuine, warm smile spread across Roman's face as he looked down at the child resting against his leg. He reached out with one finger and gently smoothed a stray lock of brown hair from Owen's forehead.

"He's a born guardian," Roman said quietly. "He saved this house twice."

They sat in comfortable silence for a long time, watching the fire crackle and listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of the sleeping child between them.

"What happens now, Roman?" Clare asked softly, looking into the flames. "The Morettis are gone. Victor is gone. Your business is secure."

Roman took a slow sip of his coffee, his dark eyes reflective. "Now, I change things."

Clare looked up at him, surprised. "Change things?"

"I spent twenty years building an empire out of fear and violence because I thought that was the only way to stay safe," Roman said, turning his head to look directly into her blue eyes. "I thought if I was strong enough, rich enough, and ruthless enough, no one could touch me. But three weeks ago, a four-year-old boy pulled an alarm lever and proved that strength isn't built out of iron doors or armed guards."

He reached across the space between them, his large, warm hand gently taking hers.

"Strength is built out of the people you care about," Roman continued, his voice heavy with deep, unshakeable sincerity. "The people who will stand in a dark cellar with a crowbar to protect you. The people who make an old stone house feel like a home."

Clare felt tears prickling at the corners of her eyes, her heart swelling with an overwhelming warmth that washed away six years of loneliness and fear. "Roman..."

"I don't want to be a mafia boss anymore, Clare," Roman said simply. "I'm turning the commercial assets over to Julian and Emilio to run as legitimate corporate entities. I'm stepping down from the street operations permanently."

Clare looked at him, searching his face, seeing the absolute truth in his dark eyes. "Are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything in my life," Roman said. He raised his hand, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that had slipped down her cheek. "But I have one condition."

"What condition?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly with a quiet laugh.

"I need a new head of domestic operations," Roman said, a quiet, playful spark lighting up his eyes. "Someone who can manage a forty-room estate, keep the guards in line, and tell me to my face when I'm being stubborn."

Clare let out a soft laugh, resting her forehead against his chest, her hand tightening around his. "That sounds like a very demanding job."

"The pay is terrible," Roman whispered into her hair, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. "But the family benefits are exceptional."
