Chapter 9 - The New Master of the House

Six months later.

The spring sun shone brightly over the manicured lawns of the Calder estate, turning the fresh green grass into a brilliant velvet carpet. The high iron perimeter gates stood wide open, welcoming a fleet of delivery trucks bringing fresh trees, flowering shrubs, and outdoor furniture for the complete renovation of the east wing.

The dark, fortress-like atmosphere that had hung over the estate for decades had completely vanished.

Where armed security guards in black tactical gear used to patrol the stone courtyard, team members from a local landscape architecture firm were now installing a massive stone fountain surrounded by rose bushes and lavender.

Standing on the newly rebuilt second-floor balcony, wearing a dark navy blazer and open-collared white shirt, was Roman Calder. He looked younger, lighter, the deep lines of stress on his face smoothed away by six months of peace and legitimate corporate management.

Beside him stood Clare, looking radiant in a dark green summer dress, her auburn hair tumbling loosely down her back in soft, sunlit waves. Her hand rested comfortably in Roman's, her fingers intertwined with his.

Down on the grass below, four-year-old Owen was running happily through the lawn sprinklers, chased by a friendly young golden retriever puppy Roman had bought him for his fifth birthday two weeks ago. The boy's joyful laughter echoed across the sunny courtyard, filling the air with a sound the old stone house had never heard before.

Julian Vane stepped out onto the balcony, carrying a thin leather folder. He wore his usual dark suit, but his expression was relaxed, a faint smile touching his lips as he looked down at the boy playing on the lawn.

"The final transfer papers for the dockland conversion project have been signed," Julian reported, handing a document to Roman. "The old shipping warehouses are being torn down next month to make way for the new public park and community center."

"Good," Roman said, signing his name smoothly at the bottom of the page. "Make sure the local trade union workers get first priority for the construction contracts."

"Already taken care of," Julian said, taking the folder back. He looked at Clare and bowed his head slightly with genuine respect. "Mrs. Dawson... or should I say, the future Mrs. Calder... the catering arrangements for next month's ceremony have been finalized."

Clare smiled warmly at him. "Thank you, Julian. Just make sure there are plenty of chocolate cupcakes for Owen."

"I have personally instructed the chef that the cupcakes are the highest priority item on the menu," Julian replied with a dry, refined humor before turning to walk back inside.

Roman pulled Clare closer to his side, his arm wrapping around her waist as they leaned against the stone balustrade, watching their son run across the bright green grass.

"He's getting fast," Roman remarked, nodding toward Owen, who was currently outrunning the golden retriever puppy.

"He gets that from his mother," Clare said proudly, resting her head against his shoulder. "I had to run fast to drag you out of that pantry, remember?"

Roman let out a low, deep laugh, turning his head to press a soft kiss against her hair. "I will never be allowed to forget that, will I?"

"Never," Clare promised, looking up into his eyes with absolute devotion. "It's my favorite story to tell."
