Chapter 10 - The Baker's Chair

Six months later.
The morning sun streamed through the high leaded windows of the Moretti estate, illuminating the lush green garden outside. The cold rain of winter had vanished, replaced by the warm, sweet air of late May.
In the small conservatory, the grand glass table was covered with fresh flowers, silver coffee pots, and a large wicker basket filled with warm cardamom rolls, fresh croissants, and artisanal rye bread—all baked from scratch.
I stood at the head of the table, wearing a simple linen dress, pouring fresh Earl Grey tea into two china cups.
The heavy glass door slid open, and Adrian walked into the room.
He looked completely transformed. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his dark eyes relaxed, a genuine warmth radiating from his face.
Behind him trotted Winston, wearing a small leather collar bearing a silver tag that read: Chief of Security.
"Good morning, Mr. Moretti," I teased, setting the teapot down.
Adrian walked over, pulling me into his arms, wrapping his hands around my waist and pressing a deep, lingering kiss against my lips. "Good morning, Miss Brooks. Or should I say... partner?"
Three weeks ago, the former Brooks Family Bakery had officially reopened in downtown Chicago—not as a small neighborhood shop, but as a grand artisanal bakery funded jointly by the Moretti Foundation and my father, who was now living in a private sunlit home three miles away, his health stabilizing under the best care in the state.
"The cardamom rolls are fresh," I smiled, tracing the jawline of the man who had changed my entire world. "I brought them up ten minutes ago."
Adrian reached for a roll, taking a bite, his eyes closing in pure appreciation. "Better than the first day."
"Everything is better than the first day," I said softly, resting my head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart.
Suddenly, a soft knock echoed at the door.
Claire Whitmore stepped inside, holding a digital tablet. A soft, genuine smile touched her lips as she looked at us—a sight that would have been unthinkable six months ago.
"Mr. Moretti, the legal contracts for the new community center in Milwaukee are ready for your signature," Claire announced warmly. "And... there is a minor incident in your private study."
Adrian raised an eyebrow, looking down at Winston, who was currently sitting innocently at his feet. "What incident?"
"It appears Miss Brooks left her reading glasses on your desk," Claire smiled mischievously, "and Winston is currently sitting in your leather chair wearing them."
Adrian threw his head back and laughed—a loud, rich, joyful sound that echoed through the sunlit conservatory and filled every corner of the house with light.

He took my hand, locking his fingers with mine, and looked down at me with endless love in his eyes.
"Come on, Elena," Adrian smiled, pulling me toward the door. "Let's go defend my chair."
