Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the Dark

I stood up instantly, smoothing down my apron, my face burning under Vance’s furious stare.

"I'll take the tray downstairs, Mr. Moretti," I said quickly, reaching for the silver dishes.

"Leave the tray, Elena," Adrian said calmly, his voice cold as steel as he looked at Vance. "Go to your room and rest. You've done enough work for one night."

"Thank you, sir," I murmured, stepping past Vance without making eye contact.

As I closed the study door behind me, I heard Vance’s harsh, raised voice echoing through the heavy oak. "Are you out of your mind, Adrian?! You have a temporary domestic sitting at your desk reviewing financial ledgers?! She’s a security risk!"

"She spotted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar discrepancy your team missed, Dominic," Adrian’s cool voice replied before the heavy door latched shut, cutting off the rest of the conversation.

I walked down the dark hallway, my heart racing, the sound of my footsteps lost in the thick carpet.

Instead of going straight to the basement staff quarters, I stopped by the window in the grand gallery, looking out into the snow falling over the courtyard.

The estate felt different tonight. The luxury and security felt less like a palace and more like a cage—a fortress designed to keep the world out, but also to keep Adrian trapped inside his own grief.

"You shouldn't be wandering around at midnight, Elena."

I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat.

Claire Whitmore was standing in the shadows of the gallery, dressed in a long grey robe, her hands folded neatly in front of her.

"Miss Whitmore," I gasped, pressing a hand to my chest. "I was just returning from Mr. Moretti's study."

Claire stepped into the faint moonlight streaming through the window. Her face was stern, but her eyes held a genuine, somber warning.

"I know where you were," Claire said quietly. "Elena, I’m going to tell you something for your own good. You are a nice girl. You work hard, and you care about your family. But you do not understand the world you have stepped into."

"I was just helping him with his ledgers—"

"Mr. Moretti is the head of one of the most powerful and dangerous organizations in the Midwest," Claire interrupted sharply. "Men like Dominic Vance have spent twenty years bleeding for this family. They do not trust outsiders, especially girls who capture Mr. Moretti’s attention overnight."

I swallowed hard. "I'm just a servant."

"You are a distraction," Claire corrected softly. "And in this house, distractions get people killed. Nine years ago, when Julian Moretti died, a war broke out in this city. Fifty men died in three months before Adrian locked these gates and seized absolute control. If the other families see him softening... if they see him looking at you... they will use you to hurt him."

She stepped closer, placing a cold hand on my shoulder. "Keep your head down, Elena. Serve his breakfast. Do your job. And stay out of his heart."

I lay awake in my small room in the basement for hours, watching the snow pile against the high narrow window.

At 0300, a soft scratching sound echoed outside my door.

I sat up, pulling my robe around my shoulders, and cracked the door open.

Winston was standing in the hallway, his tail wagging furiously, holding a small plush squeaky toy in his mouth. Beside him stood Adrian Moretti.

He was wearing a black wool coat, his hair damp from the snow outside. He looked tired, but his eyes softened the moment he saw me standing in the doorway.

"He wouldn't sleep," Adrian said softly, gesturing down at the dog. "He kept sitting outside my office door until I brought him down here."

I smiled weakly, dropping to my knees to pat Winston’s scruffy head. "He’s a troublemaker."

"He’s a good judge of character," Adrian corrected quietly.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy white envelope, holding it out to me.

I looked at the envelope, then up at him. "What is this?"

"An advance on your salary," Adrian said plainly. "And a bonus for your work on the ledgers tonight. It’s enough to clear your father's remaining debt at the care facility for the next two years."

My breath hitched. My hands trembled as I took the envelope. "Mr. Moretti... I can't accept this. It’s too much—"

"It’s not a gift, Elena," Adrian said, his voice low and intense, stepping an inch closer in the quiet corridor. "It’s payment for services rendered. And... a guarantee that you won't have to worry about your family while you are in my house."

He reached out, his warm thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch was brief, almost hesitant, but it sent a sharp, electric jolt straight through my skin.

May you like

"Goodnight, Elena," he whispered softly.

Before I could answer, he turned and walked down the dark hallway, Winston trotting faithfully at his heels, leaving me standing alone in the cold shadows with my heart pounding in my chest.
