Chapter 5 - The Intruder

By the third week of Ruby’s employment, the dynamics of the Vale estate had shifted entirely.

The rules were still technically in place, but they were routinely ignored. Ruby’s music was heard in every wing of the house, though she kept the volume respectable. Dominic found himself coming home earlier and earlier from his city offices, inventing absurd excuses to review inventory or check maintenance reports just to be under the same roof as her.

He would sit in his study with the door cracked open, listening to her move down the hall, singing soft pop tunes, classic jazz, or Broadway numbers while dusting the chandeliers.

His lieutenants noticed the change immediately.

"He smiled today," Marcus whispered to Carlo, Dominic’s secondary chief of security, as they stood outside the courtyard gate. "In the middle of a board meeting. A real smile."

"You're lying," Carlo said flatly. "Dominic Vale doesn't smile. He grimaces with intent."

"I swear it on my mother," Marcus insisted. "Someone dropped a file folder, it made a loud slap on the floor, and instead of threatening to break their fingers, Dominic just looked out the window and smiled."

"It's the maid," Carlo observed, shaking his head. "The broad one with the loud voice."

"Watch your tongue, Carlo," Marcus warned sharply, his tone instantly turning icy. "If Dominic hears you talk about her like that, he’ll feed you to the guard dogs."

While the staff adjusted to the boss's softening mood, the dangerous world Dominic managed outside his gates was not so easily subdued.

The Moretti family—a rival syndicate operating out of New Jersey—had been pushing against Dominic’s shipping lanes in Newark for months. Tensions were high, and Dominic had strictly reinforced the perimeter guards around the estate.

On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Dominic was in a heated video conference with his shipping managers when the security alarm blared silently on his desk monitor.

A single red indicator light flashed on the west wing perimeter.

Dominic was out of his chair in a second, pulling his weapon from his desk drawer. He stepped into the hallway, his face instantly transforming into the cold, ruthless mask of the mafia boss.

"Marcus!" Dominic barked into his earpiece.

"We have two intruders near the service entrance, boss," Marcus’s voice came through the comms. "They breached the south fence. We're moving to intercept."

Dominic’s heart hit his throat.

The service entrance.

That was where the laundry room and housekeeping supplies were located.

That was where Ruby was.

Dominic sprinted down the west corridor, his heavy leather shoes pounding against the floor. Every instinct in his body was screaming. He didn't care about his property, his money, or his empire.

He only cared about her.

He reached the heavy service door, kicking it open with a deafening crash.

Inside the wide utility hallway, two men in dark clothes and tactical gear were pinned against the wall.

Not by Marcus’s guards.

By Ruby.

Ruby was standing near a overturned laundry cart, holding a heavy, industrial-grade stainless steel floor buffer like a battering ram. One intruder was groaning on the floor, clutching his knee where the heavy machine had slammed into him. The second intruder was holding his hands up in absolute surrender, cornered against the linen closet, his face dripping with boiling hot soapy water from a mop bucket Ruby had thrown over his head.

"You step one inch closer," Ruby yelled at the second man, her voice booming through the hallway like thunder, "and I swear to God I will run this industrial waxer right over your expensive shoes!"

Dominic stood in the doorway, his gun lowered, his jaw slightly open.

Marcus and three armed guards rushed in behind him, weapons raised, but stopped dead in their tracks at the scene.

The intruder on the floor whimpered. "Get her away from me! She's crazy!"

Ruby swung the floor buffer slightly, making the man flinch back against the wall. "I am a professional housekeeper, you miserable little creep! I just waxed this floor two hours ago!"

Dominic looked from the men to Ruby.

Her hair was flying wildly out of its bun, her burgundy apron was stained with bleach and soap, her chest was heaving with deep breaths, and her hazel eyes were blazing with fierce, untamed fury.

She looked magnificent.

Dominic let out a low, rough laugh—a deep, genuine sound that echoed through the utility corridor.

Marcus looked at Dominic as if he had grown a second head.

Dominic stepped forward, holstering his gun, walking straight past the cowering intruders, and stepping up to Ruby. He gently took the heavy handle of the floor buffer from her hands and set it aside.

"Are you hurt?" Dominic asked, his hands instantly reaching up to cup her face, his thumb gently wiping a fleck of dried soap from her cheek. His touch was incredibly tender, completely ignoring the armed guards and bleeding men in the room.

"I'm fine," Ruby breathed out, her adrenaline slowly winding down as she looked into his dark, intense eyes. "They surprised me. I was just trying to organize the linen closet, and they came through the fire door."

"You took down two armed hitmen with a mop and a floor buffer," Dominic said, a mixture of awe, pride, and fierce possessiveness flashing in his dark eyes.

"It was a very heavy bucket," she murmured, a small, breathless smile touching her lips.

Dominic turned his head toward Marcus, his voice instantly dropping fifty degrees into an icy, lethal growl. "Take these pieces of trash to the cellar. Call Moretti personally. Tell him if he sends another rat onto my property, I will personally demolish every dock he owns in New Jersey."

"Right away, boss," Marcus said, grabbing the intruders by their collars and dragging them out.

May you like

Dominic turned back to Ruby, his hands slipping down from her face to grip her shoulders, pulling her close against his body.

"You're done for the day," he commanded softly. "You're coming with me."
