Chapter 6 - The Shift

Dominic led Ruby upstairs to his private living quarters on the top floor—a section of the house no employee had ever been allowed to enter.

It was a vast, open-concept suite with floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the dense green forest of the estate. The decor was minimal, masculine, and sleek, dominated by dark gray leather, polished black steel, and deep walnut wood.

Dominic guided her to a plush velvet sofa, instructing her to sit while he went into his master bathroom and returned with a warm, damp towel.

He sat on the coffee table directly in front of her, leaning in close to gently wipe her hands and arms, cleaning off the soap residue from her fight down below.

Ruby watched him silently. His broad shoulders were tense under his crisp white dress shirt, his dark hair slightly rumpled, his strong hands moving over her skin with painstaking care.

"Dominic," she said softly.

"Hmm?" he murmured, concentrating on wiping a small smudge of grime from her wrist.

"You don't have to wait on me. I'm the maid, remember?"

Dominic stopped. He set the towel down on the table, looking up into her eyes. His hands remained resting gently on her knees.

"You are not just the maid, Ruby," he said, his voice deep, gravelly, and intensely serious. "Not anymore."

Ruby felt her heart leap into her throat. "What am I, then?"

Dominic reached up, his fingers trailing slowly along her jawline, tucking a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear. His touch sent a shiver straight down her spine.

"You are the only person who has made this house feel like a home in ten years," Dominic confessed quietly. "You are the only sound I want to hear when I wake up, and the only thought in my head when I go to sleep."

Ruby breathed out a soft, trembling breath. "Dominic... you're a dangerous man. People fear you. I've seen the security, I know what people say about the Vale family."

"Are you afraid of me?" he asked, his eyes searching her face, a hint of raw vulnerability lingering beneath his dark gaze.

Ruby looked at his face—at the strong line of his jaw, the gentle curve of his mouth, the intense, protective devotion in his eyes.

"No," she whispered, leaning forward slightly. "I'm not afraid of you at all."

Dominic’s breath hitched. He closed the small distance between them, sliding his hand behind her neck, bringing his mouth down to meet hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and utterly devastating.

It wasn't gentle—it was filled with weeks of restrained desire, unspoken words, and the overwhelming heat that had been building between them since the moment she turned her feather duster into a microphone.

Ruby let out a soft sigh against his lips, wrapping her arms around his broad neck, pulling him closer. Her soft, generous body melted against his hard chest, her fingers weaving through his dark, thick hair.

Dominic groaned low in his throat, pulling her up against him, wrapping his powerful arms securely around her waist, deepening the kiss until both of them were breathless, trembling from the sheer intensity of the connection.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

Dominic looked down at her flushed face, his thumb softly tracing her lower lip. "No more cleaning, Ruby. No more burgundy uniforms."

Ruby laughed softly, a bright, beautiful sound that lit up the dark room. "Dominic, I can't just stop working. I need a job."

"Then work for me as my executive assistant," Dominic said smoothly, a small, arrogant smile touching his lips. "The salary is ten times higher, the hours are better, and the dress code is whatever you want it to be."

"Is singing allowed in the contract?" she teased, her brown eyes sparkling.

Dominic leaned in, kissing the corner of her mouth gently. "It's mandatory."
