Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The rain poured heavily over the city, dark thunder rumbling across the sky as evening set in.
In the executive suite of Caldwell Logistics, Richard Caldwell and Vanessa sat celebrating. They were clinking glasses of scotch, convinced that Arthur Miller’s recording would be delivered to them within the hour, giving them the ultimate weapon to destroy Claire Bennett’s reputation and force Vincent Moretti back to the negotiating table.
“To our victory,” Vanessa smirked, taking a sip of her drink. “By tomorrow morning, that fat maid will be exposed as a fraud, and Eleanor will realize what an idiot she’s been.”
Before Richard could reply, the heavy double doors of the executive suite were literally kicked off their hinges with a deafening CRACK!
The doors splintered inward, crashing onto the hardwood floor.
Vanessa shrieked, dropping her glass. Richard sprang to his feet in shock.
Four massive, dark-suited men from Moretti Security flooded into the room, securing the exits in seconds. Then, Vincent Moretti walked in.
He was not wearing a smile. He was not carrying documents. He looked like a god of vengeance clad in black, his aura so oppressive and terrifying that the air in the room seemed to instantly drop ten degrees.
Behind him walked Marcus, carrying a leather briefcase.
“Vincent!” Richard gasped, trying to maintain his composure despite shaking violently. “What is the meaning of this illegal intrusion? I will call the police!”
“Call them,” Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped into the center of the room. “Tell them that the head of the Moretti family is currently standing in your office. See if they bother to dispatch a car.”
Richard’s face turned pale. He knew as well as anyone that in this city, the police did not interfere in Moretti family business.
Vanessa backed away toward the desk, her arrogant smile completely gone. “Vincent... darling, what is going on?”
Vincent didn't even look at her. He gestured to Marcus.
Marcus stepped forward, opened the briefcase, and pulled out a stack of financial documents, tossing them onto Richard’s desk.
“Arthur Miller was arrested twenty minutes ago by federal agents,” Vincent stated quietly. “He sang like a bird in exchange for a plea deal. He gave us the wire transfer receipts, the phone recordings with Vanessa, and the contract you signed promising him another hundred thousand dollars once the story hit the press.”
Richard collapsed into his executive chair, his face losing every trace of color. “Vincent... please... it was a misunderstanding—”
“It is federal wire fraud, extortion, and criminal conspiracy,” Vincent interrupted, his tone as cold as ice. “Furthermore, while my legal team was investigating your offshore accounts this afternoon, we discovered fifteen years of systematic tax evasion and money laundering within Caldwell Logistics.”
Vincent leaned over the desk, placing his hands flat on the polished wood, his face inches from Richard’s terrified eyes.
“By eight o’clock tomorrow morning, every federal agency in the country will have these files,” Vincent said softly. “Your assets will be frozen. Your company will be seized. And you, Richard, will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary.”
Richard let out a strangled gasp, clutching his chest. “Vincent... no! Have mercy! We were partners for years!”
“You targeted the woman I love,” Vincent hissed, his hazel eyes flashing with lethal intent. “You tried to destroy her soul for your own pathetic greed. Mercy is not a concept you are entitled to.”
Vanessa rushed forward, grabbing Vincent’s arm frantically. “Vincent! Please! Don't do this to my family! I did it because I love you! She’s nobody! She’s just a maid! I was supposed to be your wife!”
Vincent turned his head slowly, looking down at Vanessa’s hands on his arm as if she were a toxic pest.
He yanked his arm back with such force that Vanessa lost her balance, tumbling onto the floor in a heap of designer clothes.
“You are a miserable, cruel, empty human being,” Vincent said, looking down at her with utter disgust. “Claire Bennett has more honor, dignity, and beauty in her shadow than you will ever possess. If you ever come within a mile of her again... if you even speak her name... I will make sure you end up in a cell right next to your father.”
Vincent turned on his heel and walked out of the ruined office, his long coat snapping behind him.
May you like
“Vincent! VINCENT!” Vanessa screamed hysterically from the floor, weeping and pounding her fists against the wood as security guards closed the doors behind them.
By midnight, the news broke across all major networks. Caldwell Logistics was raided by federal authorities. Richard Caldwell was placed in handcuffs live on television, and Vanessa Caldwell was left broke, humiliated, and completely ostracized by every member of high society. The family that had tried to destroy Claire Bennett was utterly erased from power in a single night.
