Chapter 7 - The Breach of Trust

The ride back to the estate was tense. Dominic stared out the window, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles twitched.
“You shouldn’t have spoken to Moretti like that,” Dominic said, his voice clipped. “He is a vicious old man. He takes pleasure in breaking people.”
“I’m not afraid of him,” Isla said softly.
“You should be!” Dominic snapped, turning to face her, his eyes blazing with dark fury. “You don’t know what these people are capable of, Isla! They don’t just kill you—they torture you, they break your spirit, they use the people you love against you! You are a civilian!”
“I am the woman who saved your life!” Isla shouted back, her own frustration boiling over. “I stood by you when your own men were ready to watch you die! Don’t you dare treat me like an idiot!”
Dominic stared at her, stunned by her outburst. The silence in the car became heavy, electric, and charged with an unspoken desire.
Slowly, Dominic reached out, pulling her toward him. Before she could protest, his lips met hers in a fierce, desperate kiss. It was a kiss born of relief, of fear, and of weeks of denied desire. Isla gasped, but instead of pulling away, her hands slid up to his shoulders, clinging to him as the world outside blurred into darkness.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his breathing heavy. “You’re ruining me, Isla,” he whispered. “You’re making me want things I can’t afford to have.”
